So I’m A Softie. You Got a Problem With That?
The Phillipian ^ | August 30, 2004 | Tomas B Phillips

I sit here with a mixture of glee and sadness in the wake of the MTV Music Video Awards. For those who bothered to watch, it was a real departure from the explicit language, partial-nudity and simulated sex-acts that have become a staple of MTV programming in recent years. That was the glee.

On the other hand, I found it extremely distasteful and inappropriate that Alexandra and Vanessa Kerry, daughters of Presidential hopeful John Kerry, were wildly booed last night. To all of my Republican/conservative/libertarian friends out there, shame on you.

I find it unacceptable that we should ever sink to the low levels of decorum exhibited by the political Left. While I also found it inappropriate to have booed Hillary Clinton at a post-9/11 celebration in New York, that reception was at least understandable. Senator Clinton has made some rather inflammatory remarks about both the President and Republicans/Conservatives. It is therefore understandable that she would receive a rather cold welcome in response. But I have yet to hear of the Kerry daughters saying anything that would warrant such a reception. Are they not allowed to support their father? We generally consider Ron Reagan an embarrassment for his father so do we expect the Kerry daughters to be John Kerry’s “Ron Reagan?”

My friends, I am proud to see that Leftist celebrities and politicians are now being held accountable for the vilification of the Right. It gives me more joy than you could possibly imagine to see the likes of Linda Ronstadt and her ilk publicly shunned. But let’s keep in mind that in voicing our discontent we need not lose the moral high-ground.

To Alexandra and Vanessa Kerry, I apologize on behalf of the entire political Right.

Gimme a break. Exactly how many "republican/conservative/libertarian" folks does he really expect were in the audience at the friggin' VMAs?

i doubt that you would have found too many republican bush-supporters in the crowd, those people were more likely liberal democrats than conservatives, so please don't tar us with the brush you mean to use on them.

I don't think they were being booed by Republicans.

I also would question the author's presumption to say anything on behalf of the entire political right.

Are they not allowed to support their father?

Are others not allowed to show their distaste for the Kerry girls(?) public support of their father?

Oh, wait...tolerance only goes one way.

By the way tomas...you're name is missing an H

Now why does he assume anyone who booed MUST be a conservative? Conservatives generally don't hang out at the MTV music awards.

*snort*
They were bein' booed by the musicians and their guests.
Very few Repblicans among musicians at the VMA's.
So, in essence, they were being booed by their own party.

Surely you jest. You don't really think that the people in the crowd doing the booing were members of the political right, do you? Please. As if MTV music video awards shows are havens for the VRWC. Get real. The crowd was made up of a bunch of alienated young people. I doubt that many of them will vote for W. They just don't like adults or authority in general. They would have booed pretty much anyone.

For that matter, their booing might have been a leftist criticism of Kerry for being too pro-war. The notion that this was a bunch of country club/junior leaguer 'rightwingers' is downright silly.

Oh, but this is wrong. According to CNN it was because the audience saw pictures of the Bush twins they were booing, or maybe they didn't boo at all. At least that's what the (doctored) re-run of the show appeared to show.

Mr Philips is off message. /sarcasm

They weren't booing because it was political. They thought the older Kerry daughter was going to show her boobs like she did at Cannes, and they were screaming "NOOOOOOOO!!!!"

Matt Drudge said it right last night: The crowd was probably booing because Alexandra wasn't wearing her see-through dress.
