Large Fish Catches Boy in Minnesota

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - An 11-year-old boy was out hunting frogs on Island Lake when he became the prey. A large fish, probably a muskellunge or a northern pike, attacked the boy about 5 p.m. Thursday as he and his young sister were wading in a foot of water.

The resulting wounds on Mason DeRosier's feet and hands required 11 stitches to close.

Mason's father, Richard DeRosier, was in a paddle boat just offshore during the attack. DeRosier, a Lake County deputy sheriff, said he was facing the children when he saw a huge swirl in the water.

``Before I can say 'Holy moley! Look at that!', all of a sudden the swirl is by their feet,'' he said.

Mason said he saw the fish splash just offshore. ``It was like, maybe, 5 feet in front of us,'' Mason said. ``Then it splashed right at my foot and bit me. It hurt.''

It didn't let go. ``I smacked it in the head and tried to pry it off my foot,'' Mason said. ``He let go, but he bit my hand...''

Reminds me of the movie Lake Placid, with animal lover Betty White feeding scraps to the large water monster in a lake.

John Kerry and Lanny Davis, with no connection and operating completely independently, called for President Bush to immediately denounce large fish.

I think we ought to expect a new Hollywood thriller, "Muskie!"

A giant fish in a Minnesota lake terrorizes the community and eats the tourists.

There have been plenty of people injured by pike and musky here in Michigan. A few years back i recall reading about a guy in Jackson county needing some 60 stitches due to being attacked by a musky in his private pond.

And yet surprisingly hard to catch....main problem is a given lake can only support a handful of them because they're so big and voracious.

Evolution taught them that they are the biggest and baddest thing in the pond, and can eat anything that makes a noise. Unfortunately, evolution did not think about the fact that men might invent the outboard motor.

Sheesh! And here I am, spending hours and hours fishing for the darned muskies. I think I'll try wading for them and leave the gear at home. Uffda!

Bush responds, "I hate all man-eating fish, but they taste good after I kill them. Ain't that right Johnny boy? You probably fished man-eaters in Cambodia?! Heard you caughtchua Rasssman

Northern have teeth. Lots of 'em. My son caught a 22-inch northern last weekend (he's nine, made his weekend), and it wasn't especially big, but I showed him the teeth and told him if he ever had to remove a hook like that on his own, he needed to mind his fingers.
