After weeks of denigration of the Democratic challenger's Vietnam war record, Mr Kerry's backers have responded with allegations against the President - including the claim that he was once photographed in uniform wearing a medal ribbon he had not earned.
As polls showed that Mr Bush had edged ahead of Mr Kerry for the first time, a pro-Kerry organisation labelled the President an "impostor" over the photograph, taken in 1970 and discovered in his father's Presidential Library in Houston, Texas.
The ribbon is an Air Force Outstanding Unit Award - which was not awarded to the 111th Fighter Intercept Squadron in which Mr Bush served until 1975, five years after the photograph was taken, according to the group US War Report.

Asked about the medal ribbon, a White House spokesman said he could not respond until the record had been checked.

They have absolutely no understanding of the military do they?
My artillery unit when I was in the Ohio Army National Guard had received the Presidential Unit Citation in WW2. Due to this, I was entitled to wear that ribbon on my Class A uniform because I was with the UNIT. It does not matter that Bush was not with the unit when it received the citation, it only matters that he wore it when he was with the unit after it had been awarded....

One Week later.....
What a little b!tch! This fake isn't worthy of being a dog catcher little lessa senator!
Ping.
The big deal is that Bush built his entire run for the Presidency on his ANG unit citation and the campaign slogan "he could fly an F-102 - he can run the country" < /extreme sarcasm>
Good. Keep going Kerry. There are 55,000 arms reaching out of the grave to pull you in.
It's an interesting thing, but reeks of Rat desperation.
Bush hasn't run on his National Guard service. Bush plans to stand on his four years as President. Period!!
Kerry has said that his four months of Purple Heart poaching in Nam is the reason he should be elected. All scrutiny of thirty years ago should be on Kerry. Kerry's mysterious "V" and medals earned by his creative after action reports is what matters. And then when you speak of his abominable antiwar behaviour, he really loses. Then you add that to his refusal to support the men and women he voted to send to war in combat and you come full circle. Kerry betrayed then and he betrays now. PERIOD!!!!
The White House should simply and directly state that they would look into any potential irregularity but that they were sure that President Bush never threw that medal over the White House fence whether he earned it or not...
Since it is fun to write inane gibberish, I tried to register at DU - the prime forum for inane gibberish.
Unglücklich, registration has been shut down!
I am unable to exercise my responsibilities as a member of Communists for Kerry (q.v.).
Was he in Alabama at the time he wore it? That would make him look very bad.
This is GREAT. Now the MSM can go apoplectic investigating GEORGE BUSH again, rather than the SWIFIES. This is desparation time for Effingkerry and so PETTY that it is embarrassing to discuss.
What boggles the mind is how Kerry and his pals continue to miss the point. The vets have a legitimate gripe when they criticize Kerry's 1971 testimony. The longer Kerry refuses to recognize this, the longer the story will stick around.
I wonder how many of the 254 vets would have quietly walked away had Kerry simply apologized to them back in February?
Hey, it's Kerry's funeral.
Liberals and Democrats absolutely despise and loath military service, anything patriotic, the Flag, the Pledge of Allegiance. They can't help themselves. It's the Liberal Democrat personality disorder. That's why they can't see that they can't make a Sgt. Rock outta an of Ice Cream Soldier. It's hilarious to watch'em tryin'. It's a further indication of them having totally lost touch with reality why they would even wanna go there.
Wouldn't that make him look good? It would be the missing evidence that he did report to his guard unit in Alabama.
