BOSTON (Reuters) - An explosion that blew out a number of windows at a Boston-area laboratory specializing in stem-cell research was caused by a pipe bomb, local police said on Friday.

No one was wounded in Thursday's early morning blast at Watertown, Massachusetts-based Amaranth Bio, which says on its Web site its technology is focused on organ regeneration and that it is working on cures for diabetes and liver disorders.

In a statement, Watertown police confirmed the explosion was the result of a pipe bomb and said they believe someone broke into the facility. No arrests have been made, police said.

Local radio station WBZ reported that police had identified a "person of interest" in connection with the explosion. Watertown police were not immediately available for comment on the report.

In addition to local police, the explosion was being investigated by state police and fire officials as well as the FBI (news - web sites) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

An Amaranth Bio official did not return a telephone call seeking comment.

Stem-cell research has become the subject of nationwide debate ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November. President Bush (news - web sites) has banned federal funding for research on new embryonic stem-cell lines but Democratic candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) has said he would rescind the ban.

I wouldn't put it past a couple of liberals who want to blame right wing fanaticism for everything... by inventing it when it would least benefit us.

Or just really bad timing by some nut with a hate-on for anything abortion related. It wouldn't suprise me to find out that it was a leftist group, but I'm going to hold back on expressing an opinion until I get more information about this sus...er.."Person of Interest". God... that sounds like a grammar school award.

Disgruntled employee? Don't know anyone who is against stem cell research.

Absolutely.. But you might have to call the police there for the news if it turns out to be a liberal trying to frame a right wing nut. It won't be featured in the news much if that is the case.

Either way, I'll be the first to admit that the right has nuts too. We're pretty harsh with our criminally inclined... the left isn't.

If the bomber turns out to be some kind of prolife activist, you can be sure that there will be people here who will defend him, or rationalize what he did.

This thread, for example, is full of such excuse-making for someone who killed in the service of the prolife cause.

Does anyone else here smell a RAT at work in this case?

I wouldn't put bombings past the DNC or any of their front groups, especially where it provides them an opportunity say point their fingers and say, "Look at what those nasty right-wingers are capable of!"

I never cared for Democrats in the past, but the current crop takes slime to a whole new level.

I question the timing of this report, they are just trying to distract from our convention! Seriously, it sounds like dems trying to stir up crap to me.

I thought of the same thing. Not so PC as it is a lawyer up you a$$ in court for mistreating a suspect. This came out of CA during the Simpson debacle. LE and the DA squeezed hard and let him slip through their fingers. Person of interest is taking things slow, a wait and see approach to investigation and collection of evidence, testimonies, etc. Heck, LE knows the courts are slow anyway, why loose it to being overzealousness to convict?</p>
