Swift Boat impact on campaign
News 8 Austin ^ | Aug. 27, 2004 | Bill Schneider

The Democratic convention had one central them: Kerry is a war hero and a fighter.

That point came through immediately after the convention. Forty-two percent of voters said Kerry’s military service made them more likely to vote for him. Especially when they heard testimony of Kerry’s friends.

“You need to spend three minutes with the men who served with him then and stand by him today,” Sen. John Edwards said.

A group calling themselves Swift Boat Veterans for Truth quickly took up the challenge.

“John Kerry is no war hero,” one member said. “He betrayed all his war shipmates. He lied before the Senate,” another said.

The poll shows more than 80 percent of Americans saw or heard about the ad.

By better than 2-1, people believe Kerry is telling the truth about his service in Vietnam. But the controversy still had an impact. The number who say Kerry’s military service makes them more likely to vote for him feel by half, from 42 to 21 percent.

The Swift Boat Veterans ad not only hijacked the campaign, it raised doubts about Kerry, re-enforcing the Republican message that Kerry may not be trustworthy.

After the Democratic convention, Kerry had a slight lead over Bush as someone who is honest and trustworthy. Now he’s lost it.

Funny thing is, once upon a time it was the press who did this stuff. You didn't have to buy ad time to ferret out the truth. In those days, objectivity meant reporting the truth no matter whether the truth supported or hurt your cause.

Now all objectivity means is that you get at least one quote from each side before you spin the story. Is it any wonder that people who want to get news out have to buy ads to do it?

And is it any wonder that people recognize those ads as news?

Shalom.

"The poll shows more than 80 percent of Americans saw or heard about the ad."

Wow. That means that 100% of those who will vote have seen or heard about it. Incredible. The Swifties could never have raised enough money to get to that point of saturation!

Probably about the same as those who believed clinton. I think the stain is still to be shown.

I haven't seen this. The poll I saw said more people thought he was lying or were skeptical than thought he was telling the truth.

By better than 2-1, people believe Kerry is telling the truth about his service in Vietnam.

Did they just ask the people in the studio?

But the controversy still had an impact. The number who say Kerry’s military service makes them more likely to vote for him feel [sic] (fell?) by half, from 42 to 21 percent.

So out of the 14 people in the (liberal Austin) TV studio (or station), 10 people believe him, and 4 don't (the 4 are probably the owners and/or management). The 6 who thought his "service" was a good argument have eliminated that from their list.

How can you believe anything the media says when they are willing to repeat baldfaced lies?

My real worry is that those who are not of the rabid left, and not informed, actually swallow this stuff, hook, line, and sinker. If the average american citizen has been dumbed-down and diluted with illegals enough to go along with this tripe, we're hosed.

Fortunately, there's FR, the internet blogs, and Fox to give me hope.

Please Lord, don't let us make another mistake (like Klintoon).

I wonder what Kerry thinks regarding what would happen if he (God Forbid) DID win in November. He doesn't even realize that the SBVT isn't going away, and he's DOGGED and DOGGED and DOGGED for his entire term. Four years (if he lasts) to ferret out all of his anti-American comunist useful-idiot crap! Even if he wins, he's a LOSER! But if he does win, all of us are LOSERS as well. Keep up the fight!!!

I agree. I think it will totally eclipse the Howard Dean internet money machine thing the press kept going ga-ga over.

Exactly right. It underlines the importance of the internet and citizens getting together to get the truth told despite the MSM.
