Bill Maher returns with a new edition Friday at 11 pm. Bill's guests this week: reporter Ashleigh Banfield, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher and author Michael Eric Dyson. Plus, author and Swift Boat veteran John E. O'Neill, talk show host Chris Matthews and Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski via satellite.
As the Campaign of 2004 heats up, Bill Maher and his guests examine "527" ads, Vice President Cheney's stand on gay marriage, toxic fish, "eugenics" as a campaign platform, and the church's involvement in politics.
O'Neill can be heard on tape telling Nixon he voted for Humphrey. He's also a trial lawyer, which is a traditional Democratic constituency. He has donated money to Democratic pols in his home state and counts among his friends, the former Democratic Mayor of Houston. Oh yeah and he donated a kidney to his wife last year. The Rats can attack this man all they want, but he's a good spokesman for the SBVs.
True enough about the Humphrey thing. But careful about calling him a trial lawyer -- from their site: "Clements, ONeill, Pierce, Wilson & Fulkerson, L.L.P. handles Commercial, Oil & Gas, Securities, Intellectual Property & Employment litigation." In the legal industry, "trial lawyer" means a John Edwards type -- the plaintiff's bar.
Where can I find the records of his state and local donations? O'Neill calling himself a dem is a big-time pet peeve of mine, but I may cool off when I see something documented.
At one point Malkin was speaking and Maher just blurted "Who the f#&* cares about your book." That show has nothing to with sensible debate and more to do with stupid one-liners and playing to the lib-leaning crowd. Watch, Maher's take will be a combination of viciously attacking Bush and "who cares" about what happened 35 years ago.
O'Neill mentioned where to get them in a Washington Post internet chat that I'm sure you can find on FR. Look, everybody knows that O'Niell leans to the right when it comes to the military and foreign policy--so did the old school Dems like Scoop Jackson. That says more about the leftward drift of the current Democratic Party than it does John O'Niell's credibility.
O'Neill has donated to both, about 25,000 to Dems and 7000 to GOP. Some of the donations attributed to O'Neill are his law partner's who has a similar name.
O'Neill has stated in a kazilion interviews that he is not Republican OR Democrat. He votes for the MAN! His record backs this up.
I think Maher and his ilk (see Howard Stern) are the most effective spokesmen the Dems have right now, which is why I can't stand him. They're not utopian intellectuals or sissies, like classic liberals. They're more like libertarians who think the only way to fight the Religious Right is too vote Dem. I've never seen Maher get passionate about big government or eco junk science.
Man he is gonna get slime all over him. John O'Neill is a BRAVE and COURAGEOUS man. He has totally earned my respect.
Somebody out here in Seattle who apparently doesn't care for Tom Leykis beat him up outside a bar a couple of nights ago. The same thing should happen to Maher.
O'Neill has said he gave over $20,000 to the democrat campaign for the mayoral race in Houston. It is public record. Since campaign contribution limits were $5000 personal I would assume the bulk was made under his law firm name.
$5000 was donated to Bill White, Houston mayoral race in 2003.
Documentation is found at:
http://www.ci.houston.tx.us/citygovt/council/reports/white2-100to149.pdf
It's in PDF or I would swipe it to post here.
He gave $5000 on 3/17/2003. It's on page 32 of 50.
Is it, or is it not the case that he is also a Democrat. I thought I saw this on one of his interviews, but I may be senile.
Bill Maher is a cheap shot artist. I think you will see the condescending style quickly, but I agree with the other writers here that O' Neill if allowed to speak will win over many. But mark my words, Maher and the other play to the audience and their applause. Hopefully they'll be several vets in the audience.
This may turn out to be a sleeper win for the Swiftees. O'Neill is never going to hurt by the truth, and going at this audience is gutsy.

If you were telling fibs, would you venture into the 'heart of darkness' to tell your tales. No, you stick with sympathetic interviewers. I admire John O'neill. He'll tell his story to anyone who gives him a forum. John Kerry won't confront this story if he had his most sycophantic acolytes lobbing softball across the heart of the plate. Its obvious who is telling the truth here.
Still spreading your lies, I see.
You should be ashamed.
Stop the lying about O'Neill.
I think it boosts O'Neill's credibility a great deal that he is willing to go on these hostile TV shows. When has Kerry (or Bush?) ever subjected himself to that?
This person has repeatedly been informed of the facts yet continues to post lies about O'Neill as a fairy sprinkling pixie dust.
Oh, brother. YOu just don't listen, do you?
O'Neill is clearly heard on tape in Nixon's office saying that he voted for Humphrey.
Your attempts to make him out to be a GOP shill are lame.
And this is what Democrats do. Don't address the substance of the charge. Attack the messenger. Or the timing.
Kerry could put an end to this in a heartbeat. Release his Form #180. But he won't do that because it would reveal just what a fraud he is. A poser. A faux war hero.
Go peddle your crap elsewhere.
