WASHINGTON Editor's note: This article is the fourth in an occasional series about unexpected swing states in the 2004 presidential race. Richard Nixon was the last Republican to capture the Democratic stronghold of Minnesota back in 1972. But the native state of former Vice Presidents Walter Mondale and Hubert Humphrey once known as an outpost of the leftist politics of Scandinavia, where many Minnesotans trace their roots is a swing state in the presidential election.

I'm telling ya, there's been a gradual change for the beter in tha last few years. Must be something in the water! Norm Coleman made the switch a few years ago, Mayor Randy Kelly (DFL) endorses Bush and ticks off the entire DFL party (hehehehe!). The biggest challenge (IMHO) is to rid our urban cities of utlra-liberal city council leaders, who manage to get re-elected year after year after year.
Very interesting times up here in the North Star state!
MInn is becoming the first "suburban state"..It's NJ without Seacaucus..also, you have a low % of minorities..so there's less ethnic politics..
Continued fallout from the 100 kiloton tirade at the Wellstone memorial.
The biggest problem with city elections in the twin cities is that it is very rare that a council member will get challenged in an election. They basically run unopposed until they leave the seat open. Even then, most of the time there is only one candidate running for an open seat. I guess the basic strategy is for reelection is not to get noticed.
Good observation...
Or, you get two republican contenders who get over 60% of the vote collectively, but end up losing to a ultra-lib who only got 20% of the vote because the neither of the republicans concede to drop out.
This was the "Reiter" incident, if you know what I'm speaking of...
In St. Paul, the voter's choice is between a democrat and a left-wing nut.
Well, it's the same scenario with the ol' Southern Democrats. They're all dying off and a new generation, who can think for themselves without being told how to vote by the union or grandpa, is coming up.
Not exactly. The increase in dependent welfare recepients from the south of there, to places like St Paul, has made a difference in the politics . Quite noticeable.
where's "there?"
Chicago.
"Wellstoned Funerally" the gift that keeps on giving.
thanks..why are they moving from Chicago to St Paul?
Welfare benefits are better. They come from Detroit also.
No waiting/residency period?...
More lenient and larger payments. In all fairness though some come here because it is a safer place to live than where they are from and they are trying to escape some of the violence. In the process, things get worse in the Twin Cities.
make more $$$ for the crake trade.
Shouldn't that be the CRACK TRAD.
We gotta do something about that I-94 pipeline from Chicago/Milwaukee up to the Twin Cities. Have you noticed the crime rate in the cities along that interstate?
Thanks..is welfare in MINN a fucntion of the state, or the city..and do you have work requirements. Guiliani did wonders in NYC..cut the rolls by more than half..
yep can't spell too good gov school you know hehe
