First Large Protests Kick-Off Week Of Expected Anti-GOP Rallies (more arrests than Boston already!)

(New York-WABC, August 27, 2004) — They are here and perhaps a little earlier than expected. There are protestors and plenty of them. Thursday night a thousand people marched right down Broadway from Columbus Circle to Union Square, tying up traffic.

In just over 48 hours, Union Square will be the stage of what is expected to be the largest demonstration linked to the convention. As we get closer to the main event, more details are emerging. Reverend Jesse Jackson, filmmaker Michael Moore and actor Danny Glover are expected to be here. But the real concern is not over who is marching, but where they will end up.

Earlier than anyone expected, a flurry of demonstrations proved it is easy to snarl traffic and leave drivers snarling mad.

Angry Driver: "Why should everyone be backed up because of this nonsense!"

There were no permits for the gathering but police laid low as demonstrators moved from Columbus Circle to Union Square.

But earlier in the day, police arrested a dozen "Act-Up" members who stripped as part of an "AIDS" protest outside of the garden.

At the Plaza hotel, four people repelled down the front of the building unveiling a massive Anti-Bush banner. Protest organizers discounted complaints from onlookers.

Evan Thies: "Well I think those people would have members of the Boston Tea Party arrested for pollution."

Nudity, ropes and traffic jams. It is all a warm-up for Sunday.

Starting at noon, as many as 250,000 people are expected to march across 14th Street up Seventh Avenue to Madison Square Garden East on 34th Street then down Fifth Avenue to Broadway and back to Union Square.

Organizers say after that march they will go to Central Park despite a court ruling. They are calling it a picnic instead of a rally.

So far, in 24 hours, there have been more arrests in New York City than there were during the entire, weeklong, Democratic National Convention in Boston.

I met an aging, funky hippie yesterday that said he was going to NY city for this rally. He was a piece of work. With his 60's, balding frizzy hair to his shoulders, complete with 2 braids from his crown laying in the frizzy mess and dressed like a homeless person. He used to be a teacher. Every fact that I gave him about Kerry was shouted down with "Opinion!" Idiot.

These people are so radical and, in most cases, simply nuts that they will only drive people toward the Republican party. All the protesters, arrests, nude sit-ins, anarchist-flung molotovs, and pepper spray will only do George Bush good. Let these freaks dig their own grave--we'll provide the shovel.

But he's not..that's my point..he's an activist..he's leading protest marches in NYC..am I nuts?

You're right, of course.

But if he is banned from the RNC he will scream censorship and have network news cameras trained on him as his supporters scream to let him in. He wants to be a poster child for "censorship."

Let him in, sans videocamera and let him waddle around and insult people.

They are here and perhaps a little earlier than expected.

I expected it. It's not like these people have jobs or anything to go to.

You're so right, this is not 1968. In '68 it was possible for large groups to hold sit-in's and such with no violence.
I fear this group has little to no self control.

I watched them last night on CSPAN. The nudies in the street were just moonbats, but rappelling off infrastructure is a little more troubling. Homeland security type troubling.

For those old enough to remember '68 we shouldn't tell them what the consequences were. He he. Be very, very quiet.

I saw some coverage of this on FNC this morning.

I liked hearing about the banner, which had "TRUTH" with an arrow pointing right, and "BUSH" with an arrow pointing left. I don't think they really thought out the implications of that symbolism.

Maybe I'll send an email to the group, agreeing with them: On many matters(CFR,immigration), the truth is actually to the right of Bush.

We need to pray for the many policemen and women who will be doing their best to protect us and NYC property.

FATHER GOD, we speak your Word over the NYC policemen and women .. "NO weapon formed against them can prosper, and every tongue that rises up against them is condenmed already". Isaiah 54:17 (GOD watches over HIS Word to perform it - we just gave GOD carte-blanche to watch over NYC).

It's too bad they didn't hold this convention in a state that allows its citizens to carry concealed weapons - such as Georgia. If the protesters showed up here, us gun-totin' Southerners would make certain sure they behaved themselves.

Of course they couldn't hold the convention in Atlanta - it's worse than New York. Maybe Toomsboro would be a good venue. They've got a hotel and everything.

In addition to TV morons, there are also Print morons. Traffic is always "snarled". Hurricanes always "churn". "Repeated telephome messages were not returned".

How will the dims spin this?

Oh that's easy. The more mobs and chaos in the streets, the more misery caused for New Yorkers this week, the Dims will say "See? This illegitimate, selected pResident has enraged the entire country!!!" They will never think for a moment that it is entirely the fault of frustrated architects of a failed power grab and the favorite pastime of anarchist slackers. It's all Bush's fault, NYC! He caused us!
