John Kerry, speaking at a Martin Luther King Day celebration in Virginia last year said, "I remember well April 1968. I was serving in Vietnam, a place of violence, when the news reports brought home to me and my crewmates the violence back home and the tragic news that one of the bullets flying that terrible spring took the life of Dr. King." That date of Dr. King's death was April 4, 1968. But, according to Kerry's website, it was not until November 17, 1968 that he reported for duty in Vietnam.

FReeper Bob will probably kill me--"Didn't we settle this yesterday?--but I'd like the timeline nailed down tight before we run too quickly with this. We know that Kerry was serving on the USS Gridley in April of 1968. We know that he was aboard the Gridley when it operated off the coast of Vietnam from late 1967 until some time in '68. What we don't know is when, exactly, the Gridley embarked for home. It arrived at Long Beach on June 8, 1968, with Kerry aboard. It didn't make a beeline for Long Beach from 'Nam, so it's likely the ship was under way in April. But, I've yet to see the hard evidence to make that claim.

This is at least the second time this has been posted and both times they didnt have the curtesy to summarize what was said. Just a link to a page where you have to hunt up the stupid story and then listen.

John F*ckin' lies even when there's no conceivable benefit in it for him. In his mind, he was in Vietnam even when he wasn't. Kerry's second discovery is the Marty McFly Theory Of History!

Like "Christmas in Cambodia", being in the vicinity of Vietnam within a few weeks of the date MLK died is being "truthful".

I disagree.

Kerry went to some trouble to have his DD214 amended to add four bronze star devices to his VietNam Campaign Medal. Each star represents duty performed in a combat zone for at least one day during a specific campaign.

I beieve that Kerry is only entitled to two stars for his posting with the Swift Boats. I have presumed that the other two were due him because of duty performed aboard the Gridley in the Gulf of Tonkin. It is vitally important when the Gridly was in the Gulf of Tonkin and whether the Navy was entitled to the campaign stars for service in the Gulf at that time.

Somebody permitted Kerry to amend his DD214 and it would be informative to know how the information used in the amending was verified.
