ENEMY NEVER WOUNDED KERRY: ADMIRAL
August 27, 2004 -- An officer who served with John Kerry yesterday finally broke his silence about the Swift vets controversy - and said Kerry accidentally wounded himself before requesting his first Purple Heart. In a detailed new account that is certain to fuel the growing controversy, eyewitness William Schachte Jr., a retired rear admiral, told columnist Robert Novak for today's papers that he was "astonished" to hear Kerry's version of the events of Dec. 2, 1968, when Schachte was in command of Kerry aboard a skimmer boat on the Mekong River.
Schachte said that Kerry:
* Wasn't wounded by hostile fire.
* Wasn't even under fire by the enemy.
* "Nicked" himself with a grenade launcher and "requested a Purple Heart" afterward.

What was it that Kerry said? Oh yeah, "BRING-IT-ON!"
Good post, Ambrose.
bttt
still waiting for th book to ship... getting tired of the wait!
I dare them to attack a retired rear admiral.
We got a notice from Amazon yesterday that our copy will be delayed too.
Not a member of the SVBFT, never contacted by the Bush campaign, voted both Dem and Rep.
He only came forward after hearing others on tv claim that he was not on board that night.
Truer words were never spoken (err...typed)!
I wish this story wasnt breaking on a Friday. Hopefully it gets some traction in the MSM.
Yeah, I know.
A retired Rear Admiral who was ON THE BOAT with Kerry, and in command (what was the admiral's his rank at that time?), says no enemy fire.
This whole tawdry situation is most unfortunate. Nobody really wants to believe that Kerry could be so opportunistic as to significantly exaggerate some of these incidents.
Almost I begin to feel sorry for the man. Not for "baseless attacks" against him, but because of the emerging facts which indicate that the criticisms do indeed have significant basis.
There's no way that so many decorated officers, and others who served with and near Kerry would trash their own beloved reputations by simply lying for George W. Bush. It's simply unprecedented.
Where there's smoke, there's fire, and I don't think Kerry will bounce back from this.
Kerry might be able to pull his butt out of the fire if he issues a sincere and direct apology for his POST WAR activities. Maybe, but I think he'll have to.
If not, he will continue to be characterized as having slandered the US military in a broad way.
McGreevy also recently retired a "rear admiral".
Re: Nimzovitch and Chess... Andrew Soltis, the author of this NY Post article, is an International Master (or is he a Grand Master now? I haven't kept up with chess in 20 years) who's also written some excellent books on the subject: Pawn Structure Chess being one, and The Great Chess Tournaments And Their Stories is one of my favorite chess entertainment books.
I don't mean to be off-topic, but you can find a database of chess games from Soltis, Nimzowitch and many others at http://www.chessgames.com/

I was just in Coffeyville KS for a refinery outage, Amazon's big-assed distribution center is just north of town on US 169. I should have stopped in and checked!
