I occasionally forget to AmericaniZe my spelling when I'm in a hurry. 'Spelt' is the imperfect past tense, used in designating an ongoing action (after all, he surely didn't change the spelling from day to day, or ever for that matter); I had no use for the pluperfect in that sentence.

It's always interesting to hear American views on English grammar. Try punctuating this to make ONE complete and grammatically correct sentence:

Charles where Andrew had had has had had had had had had had had had the professor's approval.

Indeed!

However, that might have been ill-advised to say to Nimzovich. Despite his relatively small stature, he had the physique of a bodybuilder and was remarkably strong. He was also famously noted for his short temper.

Take your chances, mate (g!).

I'm afraid this challenge is beyond the effort I'm willing to devote to it. While I appreciate those of you who care deeply about language usage, I just didn't particularly like you slamming Krauthammer over something that seems so trivial to us less articulate folk. So it was irresistible to comment on your use of 'spelt' (which I had thought was not even a word until I found it in the dictionary).

Sorry if I gave you the impression that I was as much of a language buff as you appear to be. I'm just some schmuck who has a lot of respect for Krauthammer's insight into geopolitical issues.

I'm just glad most of the Democrats don't own guns and have no idea which end of the handgun to pour the gunpowder in before tamping in the wadding and adding the shot. If they knew how to do this and where to hold the lighter up next the gun to make it shoot, we'd be in big trouble.

Hopefully they won't see this description and tell all their liberal friends how to use a weapon correctly.

Okay, I'll bite. What's the correct answer to the grammar challenge?

Charles, where Andrew had had ''has had'', had had ''had had''; ''had had'' had had the professor's approval.

Presumably on a dictation test (remember those -g?).

Geopolitical views? Fine, no particular issue here -- nor did I comment at all on the views expressed in the article.

There is little (or no) excuse, however, for 1) getting the quote wrong, and 2) misspelling not one but both the chessplayer's names. This is simply beyond shoddy for a presumably competent writer such as Krauthammer.

As to the punctuation problem, see the post above.

Why don't the leftists just go and start their own darned country? It'd be SUCH a socialistic success, you know.

A good analysis of the childish, tantrum-like behavior of the neo-liberal.

"The Democrats fell unnaturally silent. For two long, agonizing years, they had to stifle and suppress. It was the most serious case of repression since Freud's Anna O. went limp. The forced deference nearly killed them."

Oh, dear me. Now I've gone and gotten coffee all over the monitor!
