AFTER ACTION: We freep Kerry in the lion's den of Santa Monica (08/26/04)
08/26/04 | David H Dennis

Posted on 08/26/2004 8:13:20 PM PDT by daviddennis

Once again, a brave band of Freepers assembled in Santa Monica outside the Fairmont Miramar at the corner of Ocean and Wilshire to freep John Kerry's $5,000 a plate fundraiser. Deep in the Land of the Limousine Liberal, we attacked the beast with our coolest and most colorful signs and costumes yet!

Ron's organizing skills were paramount in finding this "top-secret" event, but through diligent handling of sources, he was able to scope it out. Follow us, he says, and you'll visit a political world few get to see!

Freeper DoodleLady was already there when Ron arrived. Her SUV was the ideal HQ/changing station for our costumed characters Flipper and The Grinch.

Flipper and The Gtinch, complete with Santa Suit and appropriately mean Grinch mask. A great act!

The motorcade came southbound on Wilshire. Right at 6, we went th the corner of 2nd and Wilshire so we would be sure to get them coming ... And going at our main post on Ocean and Wilshire.

At 5:00 there was Doodlelady and Ron. 5:15 we had Genivive, her friend Al as Flipper the Dolphin. Ryan of the college Republicans was The Grinch. And Kerry saw us all!

I came late, as usual, and got plenty of pictures that will be on the site shortly.

Channel 7 was there and we think we got coverage - watch for us at the news tonight!

I'm posting this during our after-rally party with my t-mobile sidekick. Pictures are coming soon!

Rightly so; I really don't think it was managed well. They blocked off the street for about 20 minutes and they blocked maybe 50-100 cars. I would think you'd block off the streets about five minutes before the motorcade but it was a lot longer than that - and very unfair to the people in the cars.

If I hadn't been taking pictures, I would have been a bit mad myself, and that's pretty rare for me.

I think this is a SMPD issue, not a John Kerry issue, unless someone tells me otherwise.

Do you have thoughts on this, Ron?

Hey, I bought your comic book and thought it was very cool - especially the "I answered True before I answered False" cartoon.

Funny stuff!

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. If more would purchase it, I might actually cover my costs of production. :)

Sweet! Where in heck did you find a 'dolphin' costume? Or did you just skin it yourself?

I hoped you remembered to salute the Leftenant. In unison..."Reeporting for dooodie!"

Absolutely awesome Freep! I would have loved to join you.

A Post Script to those who were at the Bush visit Aug. 12... those of us who got to see Bush's motorcade leaving Santa Monica signed a paper menu from the Coco's we were eating at, and I got it to a field rep for President Bush who said she will be able to get it to the President! Yeah!

I figure the Kerry motorcade was delayed while he french-kissed all the Hollywood elites goodbye.

You were missed ... I still remember your wonderful Monica!

I don't know if you'd want to do a Theresa. She's not fun camp like Monica. Sad, no?

But her greatest hit sayings might be amusing ...

Hahaha, I'm surprised that the writer didn't accuse President Bush of renting the costumes and hand lettering the signs himself!

They're starting to wring their hands, especially Zev Yaroslavsky :-)

I remember your Monica, it was priceless.

Theresa would be a little more difficult. Let's see, you'd need a wig, an oversized blazer with the pockets stuffed full of play money, lots of junk jewelry...

Sign idea: John Kerry, not worth the price. Or, I spent xxxx amount of $, and all I got was John Kerry. Something like that. It could be fun, but only if Theresa keeps shooting off her mouth. Wouldn't want it to backfire...

You did good and also had FUN!. . . ?

What a tragedy that Tony Bennett is one of THEM; another icon bites the dust.

California Raises Another 3 Million Dollars For Kerry
AFP: 8/27/2004

LOS ANGELES, Aug 27 (AFP) - US Democratic presidential contender John Kerry raised more than three million dollars for his campaign at a star-studded fundraiser for party faithful in California, aides said Friday.

The fillip for the candidate's campaign coffers came from at a 5,000 dollar-a-head reception in the swanky beach-side Los Angeles area of Santa Monica where guests were entertained by legendary crooner Tony Bennett.

"Don't think of this as a fund-raiser," Jerry told his audience. "Think of it as my Hollywood audition for 'The West Wing'," he said in a joking reference to the hit US television show depicting White House life.

Bennett sang "The Best Is Yet to Come," a theme Kerry sought to echo as he pledged to "reclaim common sense and democracy in this country and put America back to work and put the middle class back into the driver's seat," if he is elected to lead the country.

"We have on our side truth, a sense of direction, a country that needs help, a world that is waiting and a sense of the possibilities in the future," the Massachusetts senator said.

A small group of supporters of President George W. Bush, whom Kerry is vying to replace, shouted "four more years" outside the hotel where the reception took place.

The contender's fundraiser in Los Angeles came as three US opinion polls showed pulling slightly ahead of John Kerry in the race for the November 2 election for the first time this year.

After the reception, Kerry flew to the Californian city of San Francisco as he pursued his campaign swing in the traditionally Democratic state, before he heads to the northwestern state of Washington.

In San Francisco he unveiled plans to create new consumer protections to help working families keep the money they have earned and be able to get ahead.

Lord, but I love "Flipper"! Roger Hedgecock (filling in for Rush today) played the theme music to the old Flipper T.V. show after going over Kerry's record - it was priceless!

Notes and Quotes From Campaign 2004

Friday August 27, 2004 11:16 PM

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - Tony Bennett crooned his hopes for the presidential race, singing ``The Best is Yet to Come'' at a $3 million fund-raiser for Democrat John Kerry.

Other famous donors at the Thursday night event included actors Sean Astin, Angelica Huston and June Lockhart.

``Don't think of this as a fund-raiser,'' Kerry told the crowd. ``Think of it as my Hollywood audition for '(The) West Wing.'''

Since Kerry is now accepting public financing for his campaign, the money will go to the Democratic National Committee's presidential campaign fund.

Kerry told the crowd he had thanked California Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer after she said she was thrilled to be with such an articulate Renaissance man who looks so great over 60.

``She said, 'No, I was talking about Tony Bennett.'''
