Bush said on Thursday that he did not believe Sen. John Kerry lied about his war record, but he declined to condemn the television commercial paid for by a veterans' group alleging Kerry came by his war medals dishonestly.

Bush made the comments during a half-hour interview with the NEW YORK TIMES for Friday editions.
"I understand how Sen. Kerry feels -- I've been attacked by 527s too," Bush said.
"I think Sen. Kerry should be proud of his record," Bush said. "No, I don't think he lied."
But when pressed repeatedly if he would specifically denounce the advertisements, which Kerry has said were being run with the tacit approval of the Bush campaign, the president refused to condemn then. Instead, he said he would talk only of the "broader issue" of the political committees that take to the airwaves with attack ads.

Don't know if this is from the Slimes interview.
I think this is the perfect opportunity for Bush and his supporters to point out the stupidity of Kerry's anti-terrorism plan, which is that he's so persuasive, he'll convince people who don't like Americans to defend us from an attack. Well, it doesn't seem to be working, does it? He can't even convince Bush to defend him from an attack by his old Navy buddies. Good luck getting France to defend him from a terrorist attack!
Why is Bush interviewing with the NYT?
I agree, this is by far the best way for Bush to handle this.
at the same time, kerry challanges W to a debate once a week up to the election. does that jackasprin realize some people work to earn a living(reside over a great nation), while others, like himself, don't show up for work and still get a check?
I wouldn't mind going out every day sitting on a stoop telling everyone how great i am and living off the taxpayer. i know that have a word for it, just can't remember it.
Here's my next prediction. About six months after Kerry loses the election, Teresa files for divorce. No woman wants to find out her husband is a delusional liar. And that's exactly what she's finding out. I don't care what she says in public, when the lights are out and she's by herself, that is exactly what she's thinking. She's also thinking about what else he's lied about.
The President is a great poker player.
President Bush is handling the issue with moderation. Why should he throw the Dems a freebie on this one, when they continue to engage in Bush bashing?
And sKerry is wondering how he is ever going to find another billionaire to marry.
Yeah, some "poker player."
First he signs the most odious law in decades, aka "Campaign finance reform," then threatens to sue those groups which criticize him.
George W. Bush is no friend to free speech.
When is the NYT going to ask Kerry if he will denounce and apologize for HIS 527 ads? Never? That's what I thought.
It's Kerry vs Vets.
Why should Bush butt in to save Kerry from his own karma?
Wait a minute, isn't this the same thing Bush said yesterday and the day before yesterday and the day before that? What's the headline?
Bob Dole is on Scarborough with Pat Buchanan. Dole was a true war hero, not a "paper" war hero like Kerry. When Dole talks, veterans listen. Veterans will continue to push this issue.
Obviously, Bush can't selectively quash one group's free speech. It's bad enough that he does it in general for all 527's. The antidote to unwelcome speech is your own speech in response. If Kerry thinks he's on solid ground, he should either fire back with his own commercials (which he can certainly afford) or sue, or shut up. Bush is doing the smart thing politically, but it's somewhat unprincipled.
I don't know much, however, after years of pouring dough to the RNC, I've gotten a lot more "bang for my buck" by forwarding a few greenbacks to the SwiftVets.
More to come after a review today of their 3rd torpedo.............Tora Tora Tora!
It used to be: "I'm a war hero!"
Now it's: "Save me George!"
