John Kerry placed in the Congressional Record on January 28, 1998 the eulogy he gave (apparently) at the funeral of a former swiftboat companion. He describes what could be an entirely different version of the Rassmann falling in the river/mine exploding story.
Didn't the dog fly out of the boat on this one. Kerry said the dog flew out of his boat when he hit a mine and it landed on another boat's deck. Well I can't recall anyone on Kerry's boat ever stating that they had hit a mine even once, so if he did, then he certainly didn't hit one twice.
So its four, four, four stories in one.
Well, I know we had one version where Rassman wasn't even on Kerry's boat, he was on the one that got hit. Then there were several versions of where Kerry got his injuries, Rassman admitted once that Kerry was injured earlier in the day.
Have you heard all the spin this evening....The stories have backfired against Bush, no one believes the stories from the Swift Boat Vets, Kerry has lost nothing in polls and following, people are sick of the smears from the Bush campaign.
It's enough to make your head spin, considering all the months of vicious lies about G.W.Bush that they all enjoyed repeating and promoting...from ads, books, movies, entertainers on stage, t.v. programs, etc.
Strange world..But is it really meltdown for Kerry, or just a temporary reaction, with his slight decline in polls? With 2 months and more to go, it still is a frightening election.

With so many versions floating around, I'm having a hard time putting this event in context. Is there a dispute over how Rassmusen ended up in the water? I remember reading that in Kerry's cowardice decision to bug-out, he may have actually dumped him in the water by accident. On the other hand, I think I've also read that Rassmusen was on another boat, and got dislodged when the mine exploded. What's the scoop on this specific story.
You don't say. The implication is that it was Kerry's boat, PCF-94. The consensus seems to be it was PCF-3 that this happened to.

This is me at August 18th VFW Convention In Cincinnati. I have had the SwiftBoat sign enlarged and have one in back window, and side back window! I taped one to newspaper rack in downtown Cincinnati two days ago, and today it was still there , for hundreds of cars and pedestrians to see.
Sheesh. This GUY, singular. Although if we are counting him based on war stories there's about nineteen of him.

Rassmann himself gave one version, contrary to Kerry's tale here that he was walking along the edge of the boat to go get another M-60, in which he was sitting perched at the back of Kerry's boat munching on a chocolate chip cookie when he was caught off guard and fell off into the water. (No firefight mentioned...just the blowing up of the mine under #3, which apparently had so much force that it blew Rassmann off of Kerry's boat dozens of yards away on the other side of the river.)
Somebody should really make a Oliver Stone JFK type short film about this incident. It would be great.
Even a Marine would probably not walk around the outside of the boat to give him the M-60. They probably would pass it through the forward hatch. :)

BTW - got my small arms training in Pendleton.
Rassmann and one other Special Forces soldier were the leaders of the indigenous troops aboard the Swift boats that day.
Unique in my experience, Rassmann says he cannot remember the name of a single SF soldier he served with! (That's like forgetting your own brother). However, we do have orders placing him in Special Forces and on team A-404 and later A-405. He was on A-404 as Civil Affairs/Psychological Operations officer at the time of this incident.
