President George W. Bush (search) is seen as the candidate who would do a better job handling the war against terrorism and a national crisis, while voters see Democrat John Kerry (search) as the candidate better able to create jobs and handle domestic issues like prescription drug benefits. The president has made gains this month in his job performance rating, but the race for the White House remains extremely tight in the week before the Republican National Convention in New York. These are some of the findings of the latest FOX News national poll of likely voters.

By the way, this is a poll of likely, NOT registered voters.
Finally, the trend is our friend.
Six points since the last poll......not bad.
Fox always seems to have him a bit lower than the rest.
Does anyone know what Shepard Smith's political leanings are?
His coverage of the Swift Boat Vets has been quite unafair! He forgets he's an anchor, not a pundit.
Exposure, particularly as President/Nominee, will remind the public how much of a regular guy he is and that deep contrast with Kerry's whining arrogance will help his numbers.
the trend appears to be a five point swing in Bush's favor (at least in the Fox, Investors, and L.A. Times) from three weeks ago. While many cite the Swifties which had some effect I suspect that trend was already there regardless of the swifties. Am very curious to see how the Gallup looks later
I like to look at tradesports.com (out of Ireland) and the Iowa electronic markets... because people bet real money there.
Both show a bump for Bush...
Polls make (up) NEWS don't they.
Tight ones make you come back for more (news)!~}
How about the polls in: Ohio, Florida, Missouri, Tennessee? I cannot find any recent data in the battleground states.
If it's not a poll of likely voters, whats the point?
Well, here's Fox.
The 3% margin of error means that the result is a statistical tie. At a typical 95% confidence level, Bush can be anywhere from leading by 5% to losing by 7%. I did not see the percentage of democrats, republicans, and independents when I glanced at the full results; so I can not conclude any group was under- or over-sampled.

Shep's definitely a lefty.
Battleground,Fox,Rasmussen and LA Times all have Bush over 50..Come on Gallup!!
wow..that's one of the higher number of undecided voters that I have seen in most polls. 13%
Maybe Fox doesn't push as hard for an answer as other polling groups do.
He's definitely going to get one helluva bounce from the convention. After all, its timed and located perfectly. It closes on almost the third anniversary of 9/11, and it's in NYC. It may be closer than that, but I see this election being somewhere between Dukkakis and Carter's 80 defeats in terms of the margins for Bush....
plus I have a gut feeling that some of these "solid Kerry" states will surprise us come vote counting time.
bump to support SWIFTVETS and GEORGE W. BUSH... http://www.swiftvets.com/
