As Laura Bush tells it, she and her husband were pulling into the driveway one night when she turned to him and said the speech he had just given wasn't very good. He drove into the garage wall.

Sure, she let be known she didn’t care for his “dead or alive” ultimatum to Osama bin Laden

Are they talking about the same speech? Bush was president when he gave the dead or alive speech so he could hardly pull into a driveway.

#3..No, the first speech was soon after they married....
...he didn't win in that particular election, if I remember correctly.

The 'dead or alive'speech of course, was as President.

The author doesn't make it clear if it is the same speech.

I believe the President still does drive on his ranch in Texas, although the SS probably discourages it anywhere else. This is most likely where the First Lady is refering to.

No, not the same speech. This is a very old interview. I saw it at least a year ago. The garage incident happened earlier in their marriage. Actually, it was quite funny the way she told it, so understated with her eyes smiling as she does. She was telling the interviewer why she tries not to criticize her husband.

They are talking about different events.

The driving story is told in President Bush's words in the book A Charge To Keep. It was in the seventies.

The car accident story is an old story. It's not meant to suggest that the 'dead or alive' speech is the same speech.

I heard her tell the "drive into the wall" story on either Letterman or Leno. It was a ditty on "I think I surprised him and broke his concentration".

She wasn't really being derogatory as a wife. I think it was more of a teacher thing....like my fabulous English Teacher who corrected the grammar of the letters sent to her by her boyfriend and sent them back to him. She did wind up with someone else eventually!!
