LAS CRUCES, N.M. - President Bush (news - web sites) wants to work with Republican Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) to pursue court action against political ads by "shadowy" outside groups, the White House said Thursday amid growing pressure on the president to denounce attacks on John Kerry (news - web sites)'s war record.
"The president said if the court action doesn't work, that he would be willing to pursue legislative action with Sen. McCain on that," Bush spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to New Mexico.
McCain, R-Ariz., has called on Bush to condemn the anti-Kerry ads, even as he is actively supporting Bush's re-election. McCain told The New York Times that he plans to personally "express my displeasure" to the president, the paper reported Thursday.
Bush called McCain from Air Force One and the two had a brief discussion about the matter, McClellan said.
The debate over Democratic nominee John Kerry's service in Vietnam has dominated the presidential race in recent weeks after the group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth aired ads questioning Kerry's decorated record.
Oh come on guys. This is called "calling Kerry's bluff".
Do you think for one second that Kerry and the Democrats (i.e. Soros) REALLY want an end to these ads? This should stop the whining instantly. It will force the Democrats to be on the record saying "NO OUR ADS, JUST YOURS."
Real politics is irksome. You have to find a way to win elections, and it isn't always pretty.
then why is he playing along with the liberal media and allowing them to pretend the only outrage is the "swifties"?
A-MEN!!!!!
Meanwhile, Kerry is an apoplectic train wreck. Who would you vote for? Rove=GENIUS
At some point, restricting speech goes beyond "irk" and changes the character of the nation from a free people in charge of their own government, to a government in charge of its subjects.
Welcome to the new USSA.
Politicians should not be regulating free speech.
BUMP
RobbyS:
Your post #31 nails the heart of
it. The one who mentions that Bush
is placating McCain is right on,
too. All the handwringing, Bush-
bashing is pointless. McCain will
have to stop attacking only SBVFT
Ads & come to the President's way;
Bob Dole will make him rational.
All of the Ads will keep running.
Chill, guys...
As for CFR, we know it STINKS.
But that's a different cause, for
a different time. Now we keep the
Dems out of power, as Bush(make
no mistake), intends to do.
Right who cares about free speech as long as Bush gets elected.
I'm sorry, but that's just a lame excuse in my book. He's had 4 years, control of the house, and technical if not actual control of the senate. To say he'll fix it later is a "head in the sand" excuse in my eyes. I can give him credit for what he's done right, I'm a big supporter of him over Kerry, but I'm also very dissapointed in many things he has done(or has failed to do)!!!
We need to turn up some heat to keep him going in the right direction instead of approving everything he does. Most importantly apply that to the AWB!!!
Hmmm.... Maybe you just have to look real hard to find it. Real, REAL hard.
I know that activist liberal Democrat judges can find it, no sweat.
In fact, they can find ANYTHING that fits their chic sense of the political correctness of the day.
If President Bush was really against the Swifties, he would have immediately come out and called for them to stop the ads. He didn't do that. Now he needs to shut McCain up since the media is following his every word and the RATS are using McCain in their ads and speeches. Bush calling McCain today puts both McCain, Kerry and the RATS/media into a box. They can't say only the Swifties ads should go while allowing 63 million ads against Bush to remain. This is poker...many freepers just don't know how to play it. Bush also knows that the FEC has already said they will not rule against the 527's. It's all so simple to see if people would just stop their knee-jerk reactions to everything!
Another voice for freedom of speech heard from.
I resolved to send $25 to the SBVT everytime someone ticks me off on this subject (down from $50 originally). I'm gonna hafta scale down again because now both sides are starting to set me off.
The swifties will defend themselves. If they aren't already working on an ad showing how Kerry (and the media if they want to go that far) has tried to silence them and victimize them yet again, they should be. They could even bring out images of poor old Max being forced to do Kerry's bidding.
The Bush campaign is probably already working on ads to show the shadowy background of the DNC and 527's. Agree or disagree, CFR was popular with the public, through it back in the Dem's face. It will further underscore Kerry's hypocracy, hunger for power and lack of moral conviction.
Bravo!
Why did Bush sign CFR?
IMO, this is what has happened. It has only taken 245 Vietnam vets out of a population of 280 million people to change the subject of the elections. This was never thought of by the wealthy elites of either party. I think it has them all running scared as they don't know what the subject might be next.
Hang in there. This is history in the making.
OK. Come up with a better idea. As long as people get to speak freely. I don't mind people knowing where political money comes from. The CFR loophole has turned out to be quite a mess.
This is a good move politically. I don't think the courts will do anything anyway. It was made law by all of Washington and accepted by the court in the first place.
It does show Bush acts when there's a problem, but Kerry bitches like a menopausal old woman.
