Republicans Not Voting for Britney Spears (Illinois Family Institute/GOP Convention Protest)
MSNBC ^ | 8/26/04 | Jeanette Walls

Some GOP'ers have a message for Britney Spears: Stay home.

The belly baring pop star is being courted to attend the Republican in New York next week, according to the Chicago Sun Times, and that has sparked outrage among some conservative groups.

'Through her immature antics, Ms. Spears has probably done more to undermine sexual morality than all of the misguided legislation introduced in the United States over the past decade,' the Illinois Family Institute wrote in an e-mail to members.

'It would be the height of hypocrisy for a party that claims to represent wholesome values to celebrate her.'

Citing Spears lesbian smooch with Madonna, her 'general immodesty,' and her annulled 56 hour marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas, the group is urging Republicans to call the GOP convention hotline to protest any appearance by Spears.

The IFI isnt the only conservative group that wants Britney to stay away from the GOP convention.

'I do hope she won't be there,' Andrea Lafferty of the Traditional Values Coalition tells the scoop.

"Name one "hot woman" that has been a benefit to a political party. Just one. Do it. Don't chicken out."

Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, Katherine Harris. However, they are actually very bright talented individuals who happen to be very attractive. Britney is just a "hot" airhead. She'd probably do more harm than good.

Never underestimate the power of the young vote. Don't forget that what probably put Bill Clinton over the hump in '92 was that he went on MTV and the Arsenio Hall show. He knew how to play up to that group of voters, and we should learn from his lesson!

Clinton used his own musical talent ability to enhance his image. That was "outreach." What you are suggesting is that young voters might be brought into the party if they use "cool" celebs as a front; "If you think Britney's cool, and she thinks I'm cool, then you will think I'm cool too!"

That is pandering.

BTW -- I doubt Kerry is all that proficient on the guitar. If he was good enough, he probably would have played "Johnny B. Goode" at an event by now.

Hey, I don't care if Britney Spears and Dick Cheney do a duet of "Muskrat Love".

Whatever it takes to get Bush-Cheney re-elected so we can have a better chance of getting a conservative government (and conservative Supreme Court Justices!!!).

The 'Pubbies should get Nick Lachey. It's not like he has anything else to do.

Grow up. No one whose vote would be swayed by Britney's support is old enough to vote.

No, really? Gee. Read post #58 of this thread.

I think many people are turned off by religious zealotry, Good people who believe their relationship with a Creator is personal.

I agree with this completely, and I think it fits in nicely with what I believe to be the first law of true conservatism: mind your own business.

When she is dressed so provocatively, she is performing on stage. Is she any less covered than the average Radio City Rockette was in the 1940's?

Nice try (Not work-safe). Britney was bursting out of a Catholic schoolgirl uniform (with blouse tied like a halter and her navel showing) in her first video for "Baby One More Time," and things have progressed -- or regressed -- from that point. The Rockettes, famed for their long and luscious legs, didn't have outfits that showed cleavage until 1982.

Besides, nothing she has worn in public (that I have seen at least) would be considered more than PG-13, and probably could make it into a PG movie too!

Again, I say, nice try (not work-safe either).

That speaks more to what is allowed in a PG-13 movie nowadays. Ten years ago, there's no way that, for example, Van Helsing would have gotten PG-13. Bruce Almighty probably wouldn't have either, with it's F-word in a key scene.

Besides, the conventions are not for immature teenagers going to the movies, they are for voting-age adults.

I agree 100%! I am a spiritual person, but I get embarrassed by these Republicans that claim they are from such a high moral ground. Do they not realize they are running people away from the party when they do this? What morons! Please bring Brinteny Spears. She is welcomed in the Republican party by the majority.

Bush-Cheney has enough trouble standing up to the Schumck Chumers and the Dick Durbins to get conservative SCOTUS nominees! And you think if B-C is pushed over the top by Twitney fans, they're going to figure that's a mandate to move further right?

What are you smoking???

"Do you "love" John Kerry? Seriously?"

Ask yourself what you would do if given the real opportunity to bring John Kerry to Christ. Does it require you to love John Kerry, or to love Christ?

And don't you believe that your love of Christ, and His love of all of God's children, would temper your feeling towards Kerry under those circumstances?

I don't love John Kerry as anything more than a child of God, nor do I "hate" him however. I oppose his actions, and vehemently disagree with his politics, but I don't hate him.

And yes, I believe him to be guilty of treason as defined by the Constitution.

I am sorry of I am less that eloquent, but my religion is something I rarely, if ever, discuss in this forum, I just found it odd that you would use such terminology, knowing the little I know about you.

Perhaps I was wrong, and under the wrong impression.

One last question...

What action of yours do you think would be more effective in transforming Britney into the Christian person that we should all be?

Shunning her and calling her "slutbag", or embracing her, and telling her about Our Lord's love, and His promise of forgiveness, and eternal life?

Well then we need to create our own Counter Culture using Christian Rock, and Patriot themes in movies. The GOP needs its own Propaganda center just like the DNC does to promote American Values.

I don't have a problem with that at all. It seems to be working for the Dems. After all, how else can they justify their election results when they lose on the ideas. Give us the power of ideas AND culture and we'll be unstoppable.
