I am certain Stars & Stripes did report many of his missions. The bigger question is, what sort of information would one glean from those reports, as opposed to what Kerry said himself? I would be interested to see if any of what Kerry has said that could be corroborated with what was printed in Stars & Stripes at the time.

While there doesn't seem to be firm evidence (yet) the tactic of "piggy back" or "me-too" medals may be a factor.
If everyone in the squad is given a lesser medal but one that is "dependent" on the "hero" it tends to gain support and may affect recollections?
