I don't know about other branches of the service,
but the Navy allowed them to have longer hair at
that time. I don't know if it was because it was
fashionable, or because it kept them from sticking
out like a sore thumb when around people who were
so anti-war, and anti-military, that their safety
was in doubt.
However, men's hair was so long in
those days that they STILL stuck out
like sore thumbs.

Hubby was Navy, and he is considered to have served
in S.E. Asia, I believe. That is probably because
he dropped bombs in Cambodia and Laos, as well as
Viet Nam.
My impression was that anyone who was part of the
effort, and was in the area, is considered to have
served in Viet Nam...not just those with boots on
the ground.
Too bad Kerry wasn't with Teddy Kennedy at ...
