"OBL has displayed great patience in the development and executions of AQ attacks."
There is a reason they say someone is "running around like a chicken with its head cut off". Whether literally or figuratively, AQ has been pretty well decapitated. Even if UBL is still alive and operating, he is "cut off" to a large extent from active leadership. They are flailing, and as many blows as we are blocking, their volume and intensity, though careless, will eventually have a result. We have had an almost unbroken threat period since the end of last year. Sheer quantity is its own force multiplier.
It is "use it or lose it" for them. We are seeing this as the end of the beginning. They see this as the beginning of the end. It is a completely different mindset.
Thank you Godzilla.
I wish I could share your optimism. Lack of success against US targets outside of Iraq/Afganistan does not mean they are at this stage yet. They are fighting a global battle too, with successes in Spain, Russia and most recently Indoneasia. The Russia operation showed a lot of planning and it has been said that AQ started planning 9/11 after the failed bombing attack in 1993. No, OBL and Zawahri are cool ones, that is for sure.
Some of my biggest mistakes in life are when I did not trust my instincts. If you lived in an area with a less diverse community, I'd brush it off as 9/11 nerves. But the fact you probably see things on the train every week that other Americans would consider "odd" means you have a higher tolerance for the unusual than most. I live in a large city, I brought some relatives downtown years ago and it looked like they were going to have a nervous breakdown with eyes darting back and forth - - fight or flight responses in full gear. They are from a large metropolitan area, but the demographics are very different, very homogeneous.
The fact other locals were "scoping" the guy out means it was not just you. While odds are that he was just "odd", it is near 9/11, and there has been a lot of "train talk", I'd still trust my instinct when it comes to things like that.
Vigilance means walking a fine line between panic and passivity.
I think what really hit me is that if he really was dialing a number to activate a bomb like they did in Madrid, there is nothing vigilance could do in that case. It would only take mere seconds from the time he dialed the call to the explosion. There are so many of them here and there is no way to tell who might be an AQ operative. As Appalachian Dweller so eloquently mentioned in his earlier post, this was a beautiful September morning - eerily reminiscent of 9/11. This morning, looking up at the buildings in NYC against the clear blue sky on this day before the third anniversary, brought back those horrific memories of a city turned to smoke and fear. I guess I'm feeling angry that we have to live like this in our own country and that our children face an uncertain future because of them. We should never have opened our country to them. Never.
Why is the last post at 8:43. I finally have time to sit down and read the TM and now everyone is in bed. What a bunch of fuddy duddies. Just kidding. Who of you out there might know what would cause this:
The other night I heard what almost sounded like morse code. I thought it was an a/c unit on a house. But the sound did have a rythem consistent with a sqeeking (sp) contraption. It was a weird sound, so weird that I wonder if the Coneheads aren't living near me. Also the sound was louder from a distance. As I walked closer to the source the sound became lessor. As I walked further away it became louder to the put where it hurt my ears. I never heard it before and hven't heard it since. Thoughts?
What did you finally determine to be the source?
We live in a very wooded area (Cascade Mt. Range) with minimum 20 acre parcels. Some new folks moved in across the way and were not accustomed to the night time noises (coyotes, etc.) After a few nights they came over to ask about the noise that sounded like a "back up beeper on a UPS truck" that went on all night. It was a Pygmy owl. They didn't believe us until we played them a sound clip we found online. Yep, that was it.
I'm in So Cal in the San Fernando Valley. This wasn't an owl. It was like a signal that sound like a sqeeking contraption except there was not a repeating cycle, it was like Morse Code.
And thanks so much for the incredible amount & quality of links you so generously post here. I always feel like a kid in a candy store when I get to your posts!
I'm not new here, just don't post much, but find the site very informative. I had a hair-raising experience in local food store this past week after observing a man, woman and 3 small kids sort of "posting themselves" in the ready to eat food aisle. The woman and children left the store hurridly after visiting a water fountain area. The woman carried nothing from the store but a small package. I did report the incident. It made me furious that I felt so threatened by this woman wearing traditional muslim dress! I could not get out of that store fast enough!
It came from a house but I don't know what the source of the sound was. Tomorrow I will knock on doors looking for a lost dog and check out the people in that house. From where I live I could only see the back of the house but I am pretty sure which house it was.
As I walked further away it became louder to the put where it hurt my ears. I never heard it before and hven't heard it since. Thoughts?
****
A mutant roach army? ;)
Ahh, it was was coming from a house. Well, I agree, forget the owl theory :-).
I have no idea, sorry. Let us know what you find out when you do your walk about tommorrow.
