The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

High alert after Russia jet crash

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the state security services, the FSB, to probe a plane crash, and another missing plane.

One plane with 42 people on board went down in the Tula region south of the capital, Moscow.

Meanwhile, air controllers say they lost contact with a second plane with 44 passengers on board, near the southern city of Rostov-on-Don.

Algerian Al Qaeda Ally Says Appoints New Leader

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algeria's largest Islamic rebel group with ties to al Qaeda said it has appointed a new chief, known as an explosives expert, as it tries to regroup following the loss of key leaders in recent gun battles with authorities.



"Thanks to God for the appointment of Abou Mossab Abdelouadoud as the emir of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) to replace martyr Nabil Sahraoui," the GSPC said in an undated statement obtained by Reuters on Monday.


Security sources said the information was credible.


The GSPC, which has been fighting for a purist Islamic state since 1998, made headlines last year with the kidnapping of dozens of European tourists in the Sahara desert.


The United States has focused on North Africa, and Algeria in particular, over the past year in its war on terror and is trying to stop fundamentalism from gaining a foothold in Africa.


The GSPC is on the U.S. list of foreign terrorist groups and recently pledged allegiance to al Qaeda. Several of its founding members fought alongside Osama bin Laden against the Soviet occupation in Afghanistan, according to experts.

I think some lines in the sand are being drawn.

Russian Foreign Minister visits Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov began a visit to Syria on Tuesday, holding talks with his host country's counterpart on the regional situation, including the Iraq issue, bilateral relations and preparations for an imminent visit to Russia by Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Syrian FM Al-Sharaa, FM Lavrov stressed the importance of seeking peace for the Middle East based on the peace roadmap sponsored by the Quartet, which consists of the US, the EU, Russia and the UN.

He said Russia and Syria shared the view that it would be best to convene an international conference for Iraq now.

Russia is keen to expand economic and trade cooperation with Syria, he said.
