George McVelvey, mayor of Youngstown, Ohio, and a democrat for 30 years, stated today on CNN News, that he will vote for President Bush in the November election.

Mayor McVelvey, Youngstown, Ohio, has come out and stated publicly today, that he will vote for President Bush, to be re-elected in November. Mayor McVelvey said, when asked, that he had based his decision on common sense and a sense of the man, John Kerry who is running on the Democrat ticket. Quote: "if I met John Kerry this morning, for example, and I asked him, what did you have for breakfast, his answer would be, what did YOU have for breakfast? Then he would tell me that he had the same," in a further statement, McVelvey said that he would vote for President Bush because he knows, where he stands. "I may not agree on each and everything, the president says or does, but, at least I know he is a man of his word...."

It's funny to read this right after reading here that Kerry is courting conservative voters. I guess his own boat is leaking and just like in Viet Nam, self inflicted wounds are most responsible.

I'm not computer savvy, all I know, is McVelvey was on a portion of that Judy Woodruff political segment, on CNN. Around ten AM, EDT, August 24. He was live but being aired from his hometown in a part of her show. I would love to get the transcript, and/but, since Youngstown has always been heavily democrat, its possible, we could get some news from their local newspaper website.

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Mayor George M. McKelvey, who crossed party lines to support the re-election of President Bush, said he will attend next week's Republican National Convention, would deliver a speech if asked, and is willing to film commercials to help the campaign.

Wooed for months by Republicans to endorse Bush, McKelvey, a Democratic mayor of one of the state's most Democratic cities, officially did so Monday in the office of the Manchester, Bennett, Powers and Ullman law firm.

McKelvey had repeatedly stated that his endorsement for Bush would be rather meaningless, and he had no intention to endorse either Bush or Democrat John Kerry. When asked about that Monday, McKelvey said, "The only thing constant in life is change. I changed my mind."

The mayor of the eighth largest city in Ohio also said it remains to be seen if his endorsement will mean anything. But former Ohio House Speaker Jo Ann Davidson, Bush-Cheney's Ohio Valley regional chairwoman, said the campaign doesn't see McKelvey's support as a meaningless endorsement.

"It's a courageous thing for him to do," she said. "It's very exciting that he asked to help the campaign."
