HI, I am wondering what a good learning rifle would be. something that wont cost me a arm, a lag(how ever you spell it) and a few toes for the rifle and bullets.

If you want cheap, get a .22 Marlin or Ruger. Ammo doesn't cost much, either.

your best bet is to go to a firearms forum like thefiringline.com or thehighroad.org

I like breaking people on the Ruger 10-22, but a Marlin or Winchester are great too. If you're looking for a little more kick, than a Marlin or Winchester 30-30 might be another one to consider.

Ha! A gun vanity on Free Republic. Sorry, but I don't think you're going to get many responses with this crowd.

Get yourself a .22. Inexpensive, and ammo is dirt cheap. Also, because it has little to no recoil, it's a lot easier to learn how to shoot accurately than if you invest in something heavier.

The way things are going you might as well go ahead and buy a .50 sniper's rifle. :-)
But any good .22 is a start for a novice. Don't get the cheap little Ruger semi-auto though. IMHO it's not accurate enough to instill good shooting skills and habits

You can't beat a 30-30 lever action to get started with. You can also get them in .22 rim fire. Used models are plentiful.

Ruger 10/22 would be my choice. Inexpensive, pretty well-made and tons of aftermarket accessories. I transformed one of mine with a stainless bull barrel, scope and synthetic stock. It's now a highly-accurate tack-shooter that's cheap and fun.
A nice cheap rifle.

The rifle I learned on, and still my favorite, is a Remington nylon. Don't laugh. It was light enough for a 12yr old girl to handle and will always do for squirrels.
(Hope they're still making them...the guns, not squirrels!)
To: rune3345
I dunno. My first rifle was a Winchester BAR 30-06. Worked good for me.
...but you might want to start out with a .22 if you're not already an avid shooter.

You can try and teach stuff to a lot of different rifles, but most don't learn too good!

Agreed. As an NRA instructor, I HIGHLY recommend a BOLT ACTION .22 LR. That way, they can concentrate on trigger squeeze, stock weld, sight picture, etc and they can only shot ONE round at a time.
Also, remember this: BUY CHEAP, BUY TWICE!

It might sound silly, but you might look into one of the Crosman pump air rifles. They're fun as heck to shoot, and cheaper than heck.
I have a little firing range in my basement where I can get a 25' range from the target. It's loads of fun, and I've introduced a bunch of people to shooting with my little Crosman. They make a cool pump pistol, too.
