And questions keep coming. For example, Kerry recieved a Purple Heart for wounds suffered on December 2, 1968. But in Kerry's own journal, written 9 days later, he writes he and his crew, "hadn't been shot at yet." Kerry's campaign has said it is possible his first Purple Heart was awarded for unintentionally self-inflicted wounds.

I consider it pointless to go after the 2nd Purple Heart. He's got the shrapnel in his leg. There likely was at least -some- enemy fire, even if it probably wasn't "intense". It likely meets the requirements for a Purple Heart. It's the Swiftvet's weakest case, and only telling once you've accepted the pattern of all the other lies and exaggerations. If you haven't accepted that pattern yet so that it can be put into that context, seeing it presented as an attempt to discredit Kerry just looks overly picky and discredits the severity and amount of evidence in the 1st and 3rd medals.

Actually, I kinda feel the same way about the Silver Star. It's the Swiftvet's 2nd weakest case. None of them were actually there - they're just offering their own judgment call of whether or not what Kerry did rises to the level of a Silver Star.

The real meat is in the 1st PH, 3rd PH and the Bronze Star. That's where Kerry's mendacity really shines through.

Purple Heart 1 - Kerry campaign have just said that it is probably self inflicted. Also there is no after action report, like for the other 2 Purple Hearts, which is always required after hostile combat action.

Purple Heart 3 - You can't get a Purple Heart for a bruise. The butt wound occurred earlier in the day in an unrelated incident. However the butt wound appears in Kerry's citation.

Another very good, and related point, IMO, was mentioned on another thread...
Kerry was turned down in division 14 for that first purple heart. He supposedly waited and re-submitted it after he was no longer under Commander Hibbard. Kerry went to division 11 Jan 30th, and Kerry's 1st P.H. was approved Feb 28th.

From last week's interview of RASSMAN by the Washington Post, regarding the MORNING of March 13th:

As they were heading back to the boat, Kerry and Rassmann decided to blow up a five-ton rice bin to deny food to the Vietcong. In an interview last week, Rassmann recalled that they climbed on top of the huge pile and dug a hole in the rice. On the count of three, they tossed their grenades into the hole and ran.

Evidently, Kerry did not run fast enough. "He got some frags and pieces of rice in his rear end," Rassmann said with a laugh. "It was more embarrassing than painful." At the time, the incident did not seem significant, and Kerry did not mention it to anyone when he got back on the boat. He was treated at the Cam Ranh Bay US naval support facility where the shrapnel was removed and the wound was treated with a topical Bacitracin antibiotic dressing. He was returned to duty following his treatment.
