Hey, I just got on this thread. How are you doing? We got a call last night from a friend saying his wife had died last night. She had lung cancer. We are upset since it brings back all the memories about Jan. We will be ok, though.

Thats it for me tonight it is 3.15am in England and I have to get up at about 6.45am but was not sleepy after going out tonight so have enjoyed couple of hours on the dose.

The last two nights of the Convention I'll be staying at a home that has cable, so I'll get to see the whole of it Sept. 1 and 2. I'm pretty excited, as this is very dear to my heart.
I just got American Soldier by Gen. Tommy Franks (retired) from the library yesterday. It is a great read and his chapters on serving in Vietnam make Kerry look like an unbelievable girlie-man, as Franks describes finding ways to get back into combat with his wounds that kept him out of combat. I have one big criticism of his writing style. I just finished Ulysses S. Grant: Personal Memoirs, and, while reading his account of an exasperating circumstance having to do with pack mules, I was struck by his remark that he wasn't conscious of ever uttering an expletive in his life, but he could understand anyone doing so in that circumstance.
Did you catch that? The Civil War general who went through some of the bloodiest times known to man, commanding armies and bearing the horrible responsibilities of that time, being associated with all that goes with life in camp and on the battlefield, said he wasn't conscious of ever uttering an expletive. I do so wish Gen. Franks, an honorable man by every other standard, would have spared the gentle reader the coarser elements of Army life. It's one thing to cuss and spit and speak profanely and swear around the guys; it's quite another to do so to the reader. It is amazing that he and Laura Welch Bush graduated from the same high school in Midland, Texas, he one year ahead of her. I'm sure this had a lot to do with CIC and Gen. Franks sharing the same values and making them able to trust one another in the Afghani and Iraqi wars.

Re Sugar Wafers, Nabisco and Nestle: I should have quoted their real, REAL name: 'Bisco Sugar Wafers. They come in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry (light pink). They sound almost identical to your cream wafers.

Have read press briefing re President Bush requesting McCain assist him with 527s what does this actually all mean as someone in England I really do not understand what the 527s are and what McCain has to do with some Bill regarding them etc can you please explain sorry for my ignorance.
Just heard on sky that some sort of peace deal has been made in Najaf Iraq not full details yet but breaking news. Amy Kellog the FOX Reporter is just doing a report on Sky at the moment she said that details not clear yet but some deal may have been made. Statement to press maybe made shortly.

When President Bush signed the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform bill, he and Congress made the way for organizations to produce political ads that are not regulated by the same laws in making these ads that regulate the democrat and republican parties. I think 527 refers to some section of our Internal Revenue Service tax code; in any event, it is the umbrella name for groups like the Swift Vets, and George Soros' MoveOn.org, enabling them to make political ads without having the same financial accountability as the political parties.
The law created a loophole, 527's, that have allowed unlimited millions of dollars to be used to blast President Bush (and they have been used; something over $60 M to date), AND the Swift Vets for Truth incorporated under the 527 umbrella.
Kerry didn't have any complaints about the use of 527's till the Swift Vets for Truth aired its first ad. Now he's whining all over the place that Bush needs to condemn and make the Swiftees remove that ad, which Bush has absolutely no authority to do, and the Federal Elections Commission has refused to make them stop exercising their free speech. Kerry is NOT calling for the removal of the Bush-bashing ads.
Bush's strategy is to stop the 527's insofar as they use unregulated money.
Anyone, please correct any inaccuracies in the above.
I'm with you--I NEED PICTURES! He's campaigning in NM today, then back to Washington DC. I think more campaigning before his speech at the RNC next week. Hopefully we'll get some good George AND Laura pictures from that!
I think the Pres. should state he will not make any comments at all on events related to his own service, or JFK's, 30 years ago. He should challenge JKF to make the same statement. Then, if JFK brings it up during the debates, the Pres. can remind him that he was NOT going to bring that up. It would force them to focus on the issues, which, of course, I think JFK is afraid to do.
Hopefully we'll have some pictures tonight, since the Pres. was out campaigning today.

As I understand it, you're right about the 527's.
Bob Dole was on Dayside today (FOX at noon) and said JFK had called him a few days ago. According to Dole, he (Dole) really gave it to Kerry, saying it wasn't fair that Kerry wanted the ads against him to stop, but not condemning the ads against the President, pointing out that there had been many more $$$ spent on ads against the Pres. Dole said along with many vetrans he was upset by what Kerry had said AFTER he came home from Vietnam. Dole also made some comment about the main stream media not covering the flip flops and important issues. It was very telling!
