Kerry's thigh has shrapnel, records show Wound sustained in Vietnam War By and Michael Kranish, Globe Staff | April 24, 2004

WASHINGTON -- Senator John F. Kerry has shrapnel in his left thigh as a result of an injury sustained in the Vietnam War, according to medical records displayed by his presidential campaign yesterday. The records include notations for wounds for all three Purple Hearts, as well as for two bouts of pneumonia and "a minor non-specific urinary tract infection."

The shrapnel still in Kerry's thigh stems from a Feb. 20, 1969, attack for which he was awarded his second Purple Heart. Kerry has said none of the three Purple Heart wounds cost him more than a couple of days of service. Kerry was able to leave combat six months early under Navy regulations that allowed a thrice-wounded sailor to depart Vietnam early.

Asked yesterday whether the thigh bothers him, Kerry told reporters on his campaign plane: "Only when it rains."

The Kerry campaign removed a 20-page batch of documents yesterday from its website after The Boston Globe quoted a Navy officer who said the documents wrongly portrayed Kerry's service. Edward Peck had said he -- not Kerry -- was the skipper of Navy boat No. 94 at a time when the Kerry campaign website credited the senator with serving on the boat. The website had described Kerry's boat as being hit by rockets and said a crewmate was injured in an attack. But Peck said those events happened when he was the skipper. The campaign did not respond to a request to explain why the records were removed.

Someone mentioned on another thread that if one were to have any metal in one's body (presuming that the shrapnel spoken about IS metal - though I don't know if non-metal debris would be called shrapnel), you cannot undergo an MRI procedure. Kerry has undergone at least one MRI reported in the press...

The New York Sun March 30, 2004 Tuesday In a conference call with reporters yesterday, Mr. Kerry's surgeon, Bertram Zarins, said the senator has a partial tear of the subscapularis tendon in his rotator cuff. Dr. Zarins said the injury stemmed from a mishap in January on the Kerry campaign bus in Iowa.

"The senator was walking down the aisle and the bus suddenly lurched. Senator Kerry grabbed a railing and wrenched his shoulder," Dr. Zarins said. Mr. Kerry later complained of shoulder pain. In February, he underwent an MRI test that revealed the tear.

Dr. Zarins said he and Mr. Kerry initially opted for a wait-and-see approach regarding the shoulder, hoping that the pain would abate. It did not.

One of the funniest moments of my time in Viet Nam was having to fill out the "History of Veneral Disease" form with about 20 other guys in the same room. Everyone started laughing at about the same time when we reached the question: What did she look like? Honest, that was a real question on the form.

"a minor non-specific urinary tract infection."

"Hey sailor man. You want numba one boom-boom? Ten dolla. She love you long time"

"No thank you. The last one you fixed me up with gave me 'a minor non-specific urinary tract infection.'"

Are there any statistics out there that suggest how many vets used this Navy 3 Purple Heart rule to leave Vietnam early?

I bet it's VERY few, and I bet NO ONE other than Kerry did it in only 117 days of Vietnam Service!

"a minor non-specific urinary tract infection." hahaha
i was in the marines from 74-81. the closest i got to vietnam was a year on Okinawa.
nobody, but nobody, was stupid enough to let the Doc write that you had the clap in your SRB. that would show as a huge negative in your promotion review. we were supposed to be officers and gentlemen who should be above all that.
the treating physician should be asked what he treated the NSUTI with. if the answer is 1000ml of penicillin, we have a winner.

Is the 'NSUTI' sufficient reason for Kerry to keep his records sealed? I suppose that information like that would cause some damage among the female voters, but generally only smirks from the men.

My guess is that there is evidence not only of VD in the files, but also definitive proof that he has been lying about his actual injuries.

Another example of Kerry caught in a lie, but documented in the MSM.

"a minor non-specific urinary tract infection."

Is that the same thing the first JFK's (John F. Kennedy, that is) doctors called it when he had that familiar burning sensation?

John has a piece of schrapnel in his leg. But I DON'T REMEMBER the present Doc saying that he took an xray to confirm it.

I'm betting that grain of rice dissolved a long time ago, and wouldn't show up on X-rays.

I don't care if he came back with all four limbs missing and never protested the Vietnam war....his ideas are bad for this country....

Just so we all are aware, Dole's first Purple Heart wound was pretty minor and was self inflicted.

Yeah and Dole himself has said so. Big difference in character there. Dole doesn't think he deserved that first purple heart. If Kerry had been half as modest as Dole, and not tries to turn himself into a faux Sgt. York, nobody would have been questioning his war record.

That's what I was thinking, but I wanted to hear from some medical people before drawing a conclusion.

The shrapnel is significant. It means that at least one of the purple hearts was authentic.

Perhaps it was then that Kerry learned of the 3 PH rule.

Guess Cleland didn't have a good enough publicist.
