Hundreds of well- heeled guests found themselves traipsing through mud to get to John Kerry's $1,000-a-head fund-raiser at the home of venture capitalist Alan Patricof Saturday night, after the event was turned into a political Woodstock by bucketing rain.
Former model Christie Brinkley was overheard joking that the mud was a result of Republican campaign tactics.
Meanwhile, first to collar the delayed presidential hopeful when he finally showed up was hip-hop mogul turned politico Russell Simmons, who pulled Kerry aside for a stern tete-à-tete on how better to relate to the voters. Outside, Jimmy Buffett performed for the waiting crowd, which was awash in tequila.
But the buzz was almost amid by Teresa Heinz Kerry's long-winded introduction, which finaly ended soon after one heckler told her to sit down.
Later, the Kerrys headed to the East Hampton home of "Sex and the City" creator Darren Star, who co-hosted a $25,000-per-person dinner with furniture designer Mitchell Gold. It was attended by 250 guests including Sen. Chuck Schumer, actor Peter Boyle, Infinity Radio chief John Sykes and marketing exec Robert Zimmerman.
Kerry thanked Star, telling the crowd that in this economy, "Sex and the City's" fictional character of Carrie Bradshaw wouldn't even be able to afford a $15 pair of shoes.

The Hamptons may be Democrat country but John Kerry didn't make himself popular with all the locals this weekend. Well-to-do residents out for early morning bike rides and walks on Lily Pond Lane yesterday were incensed by the heavy-handed appearance of Secret Service, State Police, Suffolk Country police and East Hampton Village police, who all descended on the quiet street to clear the way for Kerry, who was heading for breakfast with Steven Spielberg on Georgica Pond.

Gosh, and here I thought all Dumbocrats were so "tolerant and compassionate." (/sarc)
That's a pretty dopey comment -- the show was set in current times, and she was able to afford $500 Manolos on a weekly newspaper columnist's salary. Sounds like times are pretty good, if that show is an indication!
Superstar!
Kerry's the last guy the terrorist want to go after. They want him elected.
Don't laugh. She may have a bright career ahead of her, speaking to tens of dozens daily on Air America.
Outside, Jimmy Buffett performed for the waiting crowd, which was awash in tequila.
I've never heard TerAYza described as being "a waiting crowd" before this.
Huh. Live and learn, I s'pose. :)
I predict she is going to have a meltdown before this is over. Teresa doesn't have the humility and faith of Mrs. Bush, or the tenacity of Rodham-Clinton, to tolerate this.
Thanks, I prefer the mesquite cutting cowboy from Crawford.
Regards, Ivan
Airhead Christie on Air America.........great synergism. LOL.
Going to meltdown?
Appears to me she's already plunged to the depths.............shouting matches with Kerry, long-winded speeches, not knowing the limits, having to be sedated to make her convention speech. God knows what happens behind closed doors.
And this heckler was among a "friendly" audience.
I was in a mall yesterday. There was a lot of shopping going on. Kerry should get out more. He'd find out people are buying shoes that cost a whole lot more than $15... and they're buying a whole lot more than just shoes.
For one thing, housing starts are at an all-time high.
Just so long as it invokves her remaining FULLY CLOTHED, AT ALL TIMES: I'm braced for the worst, otherwise. I can handle it. :)
EAST HAMPTON, N.Y., Aug. 21 - Talk about soaking the rich.
The Democratic presidential nominee, John Kerry, breezed through the Hamptons this weekend to attend private fund-raisers and siphon a couple of million dollars from the wealthy, left-leaning East End of Long Island. But the real story here was the rain.
A driving downpour on Saturday night put Mr. Kerry's arrival and appearances behind schedule. Campaign workers held umbrellas for donors getting out of their cars. Hair frizzled and mascara ran. Montauk Highway became a pond.
At a tent party for 800 guests (minimum entry fee: $1,000) at the home of the venture capitalist Alan Patricof, women lost their high heels to the mud while a trumpet player resembling Ernest Borgnine led the band in "When You're Smiling." Dozens of people with dirty feet left early.
"I had $200 designer shoes that stayed in the car," said Grace Williams, a New Jersey resident who spent the weekend in Montauk. "I'm not ruining them."
A spokeswoman for Mr. Kerry's campaign said he raised at least $2.5 million in the campaign's daylong, four-party tour of the Hamptons.
Other Democratic politicians have staged lavish, celebrity-rich fund-raisers here, and this weekend's guest lists were no exception. They included the model Christie Brinkley; the actress Candice Bergen; James Lipton, host of "Inside the Actor's Studio"; and the hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons.
What set Mr. Kerry's visit apart, said Robert Zimmerman, a national Democratic committeeman, was the support.
"There has never been a Democratic candidate who produced the level of excitement that John Kerry did," Mr. Zimmerman said. "It was the strongest I have ever seen."
After flying into Westhampton on Saturday, Mr. Kerry attended the tent party, where he delivered a campaign speech and played guitar as Jimmy Buffett sang "Brown-Eyed Girl." Then he was off to a $25,000-per-person dinner at the home of Darren Star, creator of "Sex and the City."
At a restaurant down the road, Mr. Kerry's daughter Vanessa and stepson Chris Heinz spoke at a $2,500-per-person fund-raiser.
Yesterday morning, the skies had cleared, and Mr. Kerry's wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, was the host of a 35-person lunch at the East Hampton home of the fashion designer Donna Karan.
After the festivities, Mr. Kerry and his entourage drove to Gabreski Airport in Westhampton for the flight to Boston. One East End farmer, anticipating Mr. Kerry's route, propped a sign on an old pickup truck bidding farewell. It read, "Kerry Go Home."
I was on the road yesterday, Lexington KY (dropping son off at UK) to ATL. Around 360 miles, I-75 in KY, TN, GA. Judging by the number of heavily laden trucks on the road, the economy is doing just fine.
Judging by the number of heavily laden trucks on the road, the economy is doing just fine.I drive the NJ Turnpike daily and see the same thing: roads are thick with commerce.
Ah, the economy.....I am just finishing up with a home re-modeling project....it took months to complete because I was on a waiting list from area contractors, they are so busy....every contractor I talked to said the same thing...they have more work than they could handle and each one of them was trying to hire more craftsmen....
Kerry thanked Star, telling the crowd that in this economy, "Sex and the City's" fictional character of Carrie Bradshaw wouldn't even be able to afford a $15 pair of shoes.
Uh John...you were speaking to people who paid 25 grand to hear you and your wierd wife speak. SOme crappy economy. This guy is incredible.
The socialist press in a socialist country routinely lies about how great the economy is.
The socialist press in a (relatively) free market economy routinely lies about how bad the economy is.
