Houston Area Petrochem Upset Event??

Posted on 08/22/2004 8:06:42 PM PDT by Frank_Discussion

Any Houstonians in the Southeast part of town step outside tonight? It smells NASTY. I know, I know, smelling up the news sounds funny, but you would have to smell it. I've lived in houston 30 of my 35 years, and about ten of those down here in the Clear Lake/Pasadena area, and I know what stenches can issue from the chem plants.

I've never smelled THIS - it's almost like someone detonated a city-sized rotten mango down here! Really, it has me concerned. It literally took my breath away.

Does anyone know what it might be?

And yes, it does suck to be me right now.

Let's all have an "It Sucks to be Me" Contest.

Here, I'll go first.

I live in Baghdad, Iraq.

OK, who's next?

;-)

Sounds like some kind of ester - maybe a plant making artificial flavorings had a release.

Did you call the CAER line to see if there were any reportings? I live in Seabrook and the alarm never sounded in regards to any imminent danger or shelter in place. I was inside by 7:00 so I never smelled anything. I do know that Seabrook is laying some pipe and there is one area when you drive past it's downright nasty. But that's not something that would carry far.

You're a noble person, Allegra. It sucks less for me that you're helping out over there.

If it makes you feel any better, when we approached Dallas on I-45 10 days ago, brown air hung so thick over the city one couldn't see the buildings...as bad as Houston ever was. And our son pays extra every year for the pollution inspection fee that obviously is just another rip-off for the cities and isn't doing anything to improve air quality. No wonder people are moving out of the metro areas, but then they have to drive even more to get to work...a vicious circle.

I have it at home on the fridge. I'll get back with you tonite and post it. Living in the Bayport area it's a goodwill gesture between the plants and the residents. As an early warning system it fails terribly though. If a plant is having a situation that will affect people around them they are "supposed" to leave a recorded message explaining the situation and what steps residents should take to stay safe.

If people knew what we knew, maybe they would not all be so pithy and caviler in their comments

I'm fine. Smell's gone, though I could catch a whiff of it in my car when I got in this morning, so I know it wasn't some little delusion.

I'm gonna check your thread.

EXACTLY. The Econuts say it's the cars, but I know better. Three to Four a.m. in Houston, boom, up go the nasties from the plants. Come rush hour, the smog is horrible.

"Of course, it must be the CARS! It always shows up at rush hour!"

It ticks me off, if you can't tell.

"If it was any of the above you would already be dead or have difficulty breathing, irritated eyes or nausea."

Spend any time around someone who has consumed "mass quantities" of asparagus and you'll have the same symptoms. Fortunately, I am no where near Houston!
