~ MONDAY FAVORITES ~ This week: What is your favorite dessert? |
|
In our continuing series about your favorites, we ask this week about food. We chose this topic for the most obvious of reasons--we all like eating. Instead of wasting time eating something nutritious, we skip to dessert. After all, that's the most important part of the meal. So? Post your favorite dessert and a picture on the thread. If you can't reach us via Freepmail, email us at canteenusa@canteenusa.com . By the way, you can put more than one favorite dessert. These things can be hard sometimes. We don't want to stress you. |
|
~ Dessert Exhibit A~ ~ Cookies ~ Don't see your favorite dessert? Post it on the thread. Also, post the recipe if you'd like. (Click pictures for recipes! If you have a better recipe, please share it with everyone!)
Chocolate Chip Cookies
DID YOU KNOW? |
Ruth Wakefield invented Chocolate Chip Cookies. Ruth Graves Wakefield graduated from the Framingham State Normal School Department of Household Arts in 1924. She worked as a dietitian and lectured on food, until, together with her husband she bought a tourist lodge named the Toll House Inn.
Ruth Wakefield prepared the recipes for the meals served to the guests at the Inn and gained local notoriety for her deserts. One of her favorite recipes was for Butter Drop Do cookies. The recipe called for the use of baker's chocolate and one day Ruth found herself without the needed ingredient. She substituted a semi-sweet chocolate bar cut up into bits. However, unlike the baker's chocolate the chopped up chocolate bar did not melt completely, the small pieces only softened.
As it so happened the chocolate bar had been a gift from Andrew Nestle of the Nestle Chocolate Company. As the Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe became popular, sales of Nestle's semi-sweet chocolate bar increased. Andrew Nestle and Ruth Wakefield struck a deal. Nestle would print the Toll House Cookie recipe on its packaging and Ruth Wakefield would have a lifetime supply of Nestle chocolate. (Click here to find out more information.) |

I'm starting my class on the 30th also. What are you studying?
I am just surprised that the college is starting before the schools. Seems weird.

Well, now favorite desserts, eh? Hmmm...that's a hard one. Like so many others who have posted, I have a ton of favorite desserts. That's how I keep myself in shape. Round is a shape, right?
But, now that I think about it, we have a couple of desserts that always seem to show up for special occasions. Mrs. HJ made her famous pineapple upside down cake the day we had the party to celebrate Piper's homecoming. She and her Daddy came real close to sharing birthdays - October 9th and October 11th.
One of the three musketeers...(Mrs. HJ has two very close friends, we call them that)...made this 3-layer white cake with coconut frosting. I'm not very fond of that, I prefer my coconut surrounded by dark chocolate, supporting an almond. But the ice cream! Cherry Almond Fudge or Orange Sherbet and French Vanilla Swirl...yummy!

Gee, that cake is kinda small, isn't it?
I can't see feeding any more than about 4 people with that little ol' pineapple upsidedown cake...

HiJinx - that is one beautiful cake. I just looked at the picture of it for a moment and smiled!
My baking is the joke of the family - years ago I baked for my 2 kids (Christmas cookies) it took hours and you'd a thunk I was giving birth - it was excruciating.
Anyway, miraculously, the cookies all came out ok except for the coconut macroons - they were as tough to chew as beef jerky, tasteless and were promptly used by my toddlers for Frisbee practice!
So when someone offers to bake in my kitchen I say "Go ahead - make my day!" I will clean up any mess you make if you will bake instead of me. ("If you bake it, I will clean"!)

I agree. When I make one it's a sheet cake. Sometimes when I make one to take somewhere, I make another to keep (just because).

What is Pipers favorite! LOL Seriously? Piper hasn't really had 'dessert' yet, we're all thinking she's just a bit young to be getting that much sugar...her first birthday will be soon enough!
OTOH, she does enjoy the little single servings of Mott's Applesauce...and she also likes the Gerber Fruit Cups. Oh yeah, and a freah peach off the tree out back also won her seal of approval!
