Veteran Backs Kerry on Silver Star Account (AP Trumpets Rood Account)
AP ^ | 8/21/2004

CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago Tribune editor who was on the Vietnam mission for which John Kerry received the Silver Star is backing up Kerry's account of the incident.

William Rood, 61, said he decided to break his silence about the Feb. 28, 1969, mission because reports by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth are incorrect and darken the reputations of veterans who served with Kerry, according to a report in the Tribune's Sunday editions.

Rood, an editor on the Tribune's metropolitan desk, said the allegations that Kerry's accomplishments were overblown are untrue. Kerry came up with an attack strategy that was praised by their superiors, Rood said.

"The critics have taken pains to say they're not trying to cast doubts on the merit of what others did, but their version of events has splashed doubt on all of us," Rood said in a 1,700-word first-person account published in the newspaper. "It's gotten harder and harder for those of us who were there to listen to accounts we know to be untrue, especially when they come from people who were not there."

Does somebody have a count of how many times this one guy's account has been used in articles today?

I keep seeing titles figuring they've found another veteran to back up Kerry, but it's the same guy they're writing about in every article.

I know I've read at least 4 articles, anybody keeping track?

Mark A. Kilmer's Political Annotation
http://www.rightsided.org
----
[Rood] has also admitted that his own version of the story might be inaccurate.

Why did Rood finally come forward? He seems to have been duped:

"Even though Kerry's own crew members have backed him, the attacks have continued, and in recent days Kerry has called me and others who were with him in those days, asking that we go public with our accounts.

"I can't pretend those calls had no effect on me, but that is not why I am writing this. What matters most to me is that this is hurting crewmen who are not public figures and who deserved to be honored for what they did. My intent is to tell the story here and to never again talk publicly about it."

Kerry called Rood and told him that the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth were calling him, and every other honorable man associated with the events of that day, a liar. That they were referring only to Kerry escaped Rood after the way Kerry must have framed the issue.

I am not in a position to question Mr. Rood's recollection. I am in no position to cast doubt on the recollections of the Swift Boat Vets. Kerry's own recollection is in doubt because he has so many of them, each unique from the other.

What John Kerry has done is singularly cruel.
----
What's really interesting is how much scrutiny the SwiftVets' charges are getting, especially when compared to the free pass being given to the likes of MoveOn.org.

Go to news.google.com and do a search for "rood". Then, sort by date. This will be getting huge play in tomorrow's editions (of course). If one newspaper editor says it, I guess that makes 254 veterans and countless signed affidavits irrelevant!

Doesn't surprise me. The dirtbags.

Did they mention whether this Rood is a Democrat? That the Kerry campaign is using him to do their dirty work against the other vets?

John Kerry. Dividing the country again.

"...darken the reputations of veterans who served with Kerry"

What about all the vets who had their reputations darkened by Kerry?

Yep. One journalist's word over 254 others. Its a very selective fraternity, our free press. No wonder they're all going ga-ga. They had orgasms as intense as when they reported how Bubba got away with his sexcapades.

This topic from the past is a distraction from the future.

Bush and Kerry are 'all in' in Texas Hold'em Poker.
All politics are local in the voting booth.
Election Winner will be determined by -

THE FLOP - Jobs, Dow Jones, Consumer Costs
THE RIVER - Iraq War Casualties
THE TURN - Terrorism Worries

Obermann on MSNBC this evening was talking about the Rood revelation.

The guy Obermann interviewed wasn't Rood, but Rood's mouthpiece managing editor.

I thought it strange that Rood would send his managing editor to 'defend' Rood's position/statements. Of course, one reason is to set up plausible deniability should other revelations contradict Rood.

Wait, I'm confused. Wasn't the Kerry Campaign and the lackey press insisting a couple days ago that anyone not personally in Kerry's boat had no credibility? I take it that standard no longer applies.

They are ALL repeating this story today like it is a gotcha!

They then follow up with the bogus flier story from Florida.

Monday will be interesting!

O'Neill already spokeout regarding this issue, and said it DOES NOT change anything in the book, and actually Rood does NOT add anything new. Kerry is going around, finding people to help him out, as he did with this guy. If this guy really supported him - why did he had to go and look for him??? After all - Rassman volunteered right??????

I keep seeing the articles but I figured they were Rood Rood and more Rood.

And they still haven't deigned to tell us what his big verification of Kerry/contradiction of the Swift Vets is.

Just saying he's verifying/contradicting doesn't make it so.
