Kerry Campaign Unfazed by Bush Attacks

WASHINGTON - Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites)'s campaign released a video Saturday comparing the controversy over Kerry's Vietnam service to attacks on John McCain during the 2000 Republican primaries.

The video, sent via e-mail to supporters, says, "George Bush is up to his old tricks" and shows then-Texas Gov. Bush and Arizona Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) at a debate in February 2000.

McCain, sitting next to Bush, says that when "fringe veterans groups" attacked him at a Bush campaign function, Bush stood by and didn't say a word. McCain says a group of senators wrote Bush a letter that said: "Apologize. You should be ashamed."

McCain, also a Vietnam veteran, says Bush "really went over the line."

"I don't know how you can understand this, George, but that really hurts," McCain says.

Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group funded in part by a top GOP donor in Texas, has been running ads featuring veterans who served in Vietnam at the same time as Kerry and question his wartime record.

In Roanoke, Va., on Saturday, Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites) called on Bush to end the ads.

"This is a moment of truth for George W. Bush," Edwards said at a Democratic rally. "We're going to see what kind of man he is and what kind of leader he is. ... We want to hear three words: Stop these ads."

Edwards said the commercials were from "people who financed the same kind of attacks against John McCain in the 2000 presidential campaign."

The Kerry campaign has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (news - web sites), alleging the Swift Boat Veterans group is coordinating its ads with the Bush campaign. The Bush campaign has denied the claim.

This ad is powerful. Question is whether McCain will denounce it.

McCain is on their side on this - this is going to backfire. The media hasn't even begun to fight. Bush will get creamed on this - other "Republicans" will jump on him too, as some already have.

1. They ARE fazed! And desperate (witness the filing)
2. This isn't a "Bush attack." This was an independent entity that Bush has already repudiated.
3. Fill out a 180 and refute the claims of the SBV group! Even the NYT has had to admit that Kerry has yet to do so.

IF they WERE unfazed why would they need to tell us they are?

Of course McCain will back Kerry on this. He already has. If this keeps up, he might boycott the convention. I don't like the guy but alienating him so publicly is going to hurt Bush big-time. The Swifties are ultimately going to help Kerry get elected.

The headline of the article is an untruth. But I heard on NPR that the media has no leftist bias, so I must be mistaken.......

---Kerry Campaign Unfazed by Bush Attacks---

That's why they're running around like chickens with their heads cut off and trying to repeal the 1st Amendment.

Shut up, Edwards, everyone knows that since you weren't there you're not allowed to speak about it. Only people that were in Vietnam under John Kerry's armpit have the right to comment, OK? Anyway, don't you meet Tom Harkin's criteria for cowardice just like Dick Cheney? Go home, little boy, nobody's listening.

Oh please, McCain will NOT boycott the convention. He's firmly on board with Bush and believe me, he knows what a fraud Kerry is. He's just trying to remain impartial. You might not like that, but he's not the enemy.

I said that all along. Bush should have denounced the ads in the beginning. He waited to see their effect. Big mistake because it's too late. If he denounced them the Swifties would have kept running them but Bush would be in the clear. Now his credibility is tied to theirs. Not to "swift"
