CNN: Kerry Will File Legal Challenge to Swift Boat Veterans-Demands Immediate Suspension of Ads
NewsMax.com ^ | 8/20/04 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 08/20/2004 2:40:45 PM PDT by kattracks

CNN is reporting Friday afternoon that the Kerry campaign will file a complaint with the FEC.

Wolf Blitzer reported that the campaign will allege that the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth are illegally coordinating their efforts with the Bush-Cheney campaign.

The complaint reportedly demands that the Swiftvets immediately suspend broadcasts of commericals attacking John Kerry's Vietnam War record and return any moneys raised in conjunction with the ad campaign.

The complaint is an extension of Sen. Kerry's charge on Thursday that the Swiftvets are a "front group" for the Bush Cheney campaign, alleging that the group has broken campaign laws by coordinating their efforts with the White House.

John O'Neill, author of the book "Unfit for Command," which details the charges described in the anti-Kerry commercials, said Friday that he had no connection with the White House, adding that his group wouldn't suspend the ads even if the White House asked them too.

"This isn't his fight," O'Neill told radio host Sean Hannity. "This is between the veterans who served in Vietnam and John Kerry."

"I heard Thurlow pointed out yesterday that the the report for being under fire was based on a report from JOHN KERRY. Thurlow pointed out that he has always contended that there was no enemy fire and that he did not know about the report part of it. He thought he got the medal for helping out the other boat guys."

The explanations I heard was that sKerry is the one who filled out the 'after action' report and embellished it to state that there was enemy fire.

Whoever issued the medals took sKerry's report and used it as fact since he was the one in charge of his crew. Since it was about the same incident - they added Thurlow's to this also.

He said he never saw it or had a chance to read it and feels that it denegrates his medal to be associated with sKerry's account of the incident.

He thought his medal was for staying at the scene and helping the other boats.

sKerry took off in his boat is how that Rasmunsson (sp?) guy fell off into the water. The swifties were the ones firing and there was NO enemy fire as was stated by sKerry!! There were no bullet holes in the boats.

sKerry returned with his boat AFTER the swifties firing ceased when he felt he was in no danger and that's when he picked the guy out of the water - just as the other boats were ready to do it.

sKerry is a traitor and a coward!!

What a hypocritical monster. I think people will see right through this. Bush did not rant and rave and try to stop Michael Moore's crap, nor did he rant and rave and try to stop MoveOn.org. But Kerry is having a hissy fit over FREE SPEECH. Very interesting.

Rather ballsy considering the Kerry campaign actually HIRED the guy working on the MoveOn.org website. Why is nobody throwing THAT back in his face?

Oh yeah, that's because the media doesn't bother to tell you that.

This isn't his [President Bush's] fight," O'Neill told radio host Sean Hannity. "This is between the veterans who served in Vietnam and John Kerry."

Nothing more need be said. End of discussion.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the law that the "Campaign" is not allowed to coordinate with a 527 group? There is an organization called Kerry/Edwards Campaign and then there is the organization called Democratic National Committee. Likewise there is an organization called the Bush/Cheney Campaign and an organization called the Republican National Committee. All four are different organizations. Therefore the DNC is legally allowed to coordinate with moveon.org.

I don't like it but I have to abide by it.

When you say "I don't like it but I have to abide by it."

Why are you referring to the Fugitive Slave Laws? That's way off topic, isn't it?

This is the same answer, to the same question, that was posed on the other thread talking about the Kerry complaint. I only add that it is another proof that these ads are drawing blood, that the Kerry campaign filed this complaint that the lawyers KNOW is going to fail. It was/is filed only to get favorable newspaper stories from favorable reporters. No more, no less.

This is a bullsh*t complaint. It will be dismissed. Keep in mind that the Federal Election Commission consists of three hard-wired Democrats and three hard-wired Republicans. It takes FOUR votes on the Commission for it to move forward on any complaint.

This complaint will get a 3-3 vote. On that basis, it will fail. End of discussion.

On the subject of coordination between campaigns and certain groups, I find the timing of Kerry's attack on the Swiftees suspicious.

After three weeks of the SBV ad being out there, Kerry just happened to pick the day the WP came out with it's hit piece on Larry Thurlow to attack the ad.

Amazing coincidence. </ sarcasm>

I do believe its time to increase the number of digits in my next donation to the Swift Vets from three to four. Kerry is fighting for his political life just because a few are unafraid to tell the truth.

We see this plain as day, but most of us support the President. What I want to know is, will enough of the rest of the electorate see it? Kerry is likely hoping the average voter is stupid, and just sees the forest without the trees. This is a veritable muddying of the waters.

Mmmm. Kerry uses the FEC as muscle against the SwiftVets in order to stifle their freedom of speech. Isn't Kerry trying to get a book pulled from the shelves the same way? This Kerry guy is a true paranoid democratic propagandist.

George Bush has had to endure character assassination commercials (lies) deliberately scheduled to air prior to an election for months now. How many moveon.org ads got FEC clipped before airing? I suppose neither Kerry or the democrats have anything to do with the timing of the 911 hearings, the Clucking Clarke book, Michael Moore's movie release date, the Bush Hitler MoveOn.org commercials, the political church monitors, the soon-to-be Anti-Bush Rock Concerts, the current Anti-Bush unionites who get on a soap box and bash the president while we are at war (caused by democrats) during an election year.

If Kerry can convince the FEC to become involved over the SwiftVet's timing, Mr. Bush and the elected Republicans of the people should have more legs to stand on with FEC law suits and investigations against Kerry for their timing, as well. However, Kerry's war records and FBI anti-war records should have prevented him from qualifying to run for any political office right from the beginning - many years ago.

Bottom line is that George Bush does not need any help from the SwiftVets, and it appears that the SwiftVets do not need any help from George Bush. Afterall, it was Kerry who decided to bring the SwiftVets into the campaign.

If there were any smart republican in office, they would come out swinging and say that the Bush administration has nothing whatsoever to do with SwiftVet commercials, and have no opinion of them whatsoever. Furthermore, they would proclaim that they will not become involved with denying any veterans' right to their freedom of speech. SwiftVets are paying for their own commercials. They do not have the Heinz-Kerry-Hollywood-Union-Soros funds that moveon.org has to draw on.

George Bush has no issues with the SwiftVets, and the SwiftVets have no issues with him. If the SwiftVets have issues with Kerry, that is between the SwiftVets and Kerry. If Kerry doesn't like their timing, he should not have been treading on his fellow soldiers backs for the past 30 years and then think he can conveniently use the SwiftVets to worm his way into the White House.

So, which is harder on Kerry. That these vets are speaking against him, or that his own quotes are being used? I would think it hard to say slander when they are using his own words.
