WINNIPEG -- In the eyes of Alice Cooper, all the rock stars campaigning for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry are guilty of one thing: treason. The shock-rock legend, a staunch Republican who attends NBA games in Phoenix with Arizona Senator John McCain, was disgusted when he learned of plans by Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, R.E.M. and other bands to hold a series of concerts aimed at unseating U.S. President George W. Bush.
"To me, that's treason. I call it treason against rock 'n' roll because rock is the antithesis of politics. Rock should never be in bed with politics," says the 56-year-old Cooper, who begins a 15-city Canadian tour on Aug. 20 in Thunder Bay, Ont.
"When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I'd run to my room and put on the Rolling Stones as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick.
"If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal."
Despite his strong insistence that rock has no place in politics, Cooper is one of just a handful of high-profile musicians who've proclaimed support for Bush.
The list of pop-culture Republicans includes Britney Spears, Toby Keith and Ted Nugent, the latter being one of Cooper's old buddies from his early days in Detroit.
Cooper's Canadian tour dates include Edmonton on Sept. 13.
Wonder if we could get Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson to play the RNC? :)
Yea? And? He is still not a republican and the editor from this paper could have easily figured that out. I just hate sloppy journalism.
A key endorsement in Oklahoma politics is to see if Barry Switzer will endorse Carson or not. Switzer significantly helped the cock fighting governor Brad Henry who was an underdog to Vince Orza, and then to Steve Largent. If Switzer remains silent or neutral on the Coburn-Carson race, Carson won't have a chance.
GI Ping
Artists consider themselves free spirits, but they all seem to share a love for leftist, and therefore, totalitarian politics. Either short on brains, or their brains are scrambled by too much noise/and/or drugs, or maybe solvents, in the case of painters.
excuse me while I pick up my jaw
and all this time I thought she was just another madge-wannabee bimbo...
What he is telling people is to consider rock stars as a poor source of information and certainly not the only source. He isn't talking about censorship here, just don't consider rock stars to be any kind of authority on how to run government. Seems to me that most of these people have a profound INABILITY to even run their own lives, let alone tell Bush how to run the country or tell voters who has the best qualifications for some elected office.
Has anyone seen the new Christina Aguilera video [Dirrty]? I think it gave my TV genital warts.
Hey, in teh late 70's, my then-fiance and I actually went to Cobo Hall in Detroit on Devil's Night ( this is before the Tradition of Burning the City hhad become so wide-spread) to see Alice.
Billion Dollar Baby Tour I think.
Lot's of cool spooky effects for Halloween.
Couldn't hear right for two days.
Stupid youth!
I'm eighteen.
School's out.
Billion dollar babies.
And many many others, great Rock and Roll.
We should run her for US Senate from Louisiana-- we've tried everything else at this point.
Some lowdown on Alice:
lives here in Phoenix;
is a professing Christian who attends one of the local Baptist churches;
owns a restaurant downtown called Cooperstown;
is active in the community;
does local commercials.
This past May at a friend's graduation he was the keynote speaker at Grand Canyon College, a Christian University.
Good guy.
Exactly. My dad is a dem. and would never vote for Kerry. I was a dem. but never voted for a democratic candidate for president. My congressman was Wes Watkins who was a conservative democrat who switched parties. I switched parties shortly after Watkins did.
I've seen that. And you are right. It's cute.
I liked him in "Wayne's World", too!
"Alice Cooper? She's a man, baybeee!"
Wow! Brutally honest, as usual LOL
I thought Switzer was a demoncrat who supports Kerry, at least his political donations would point that way.
Go Alice!
