The Los Angeles Times notes this morning that he Kerry campaign has hired former Clinton White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart and Joel Johnson, a lobbyist who worked for President Clinton to help respond to the Swift Boat Veteran's attacks.
Group officials who discuss strategy on condition of anonymity said that the anti-Kerry group plans to hammer the Democrat for his war claims and protests after he left Vietnam, especially his claims that US soldiers committed war crimes.
The group are also arranging local veterans to criticize Kerry when he vists their states.
Aides said Kerry has been flooded with calls from concerned veterans, and a CBS poll released last night showed the senator losing significant support amongst those who served in the armed forces.
Instead of rebutting each charge, Kerry blamed Bush for sanctioning such highly personal attacks, though there is no evidence that the presdients campaign has any direct connections to the anti-Kerry group.

When I think of June Lockhart, I think - Lassie.
When I think of Joe Lockhart, I think - gassy.
Panic mode over inexpensive but credible ads is wonderful.
Kerry MUST sign the SF-180 and release his military personnel record to the public.
Anything less will keep this thing on the front burner all the way to election day in November.
Something tells me the Swift Vets are up to the task. This will, of course, backfire horrendously. What a horrible move. The last thing Kerry needs is to keep this thing in the limelight. Hiring what's-his-face Lockhart will do just that.
Let's see, I'm Joe Public and I have a choice of believing a large group of honored Vietnam Veterans from a range of political leanings and nothing personal to gain...
or Joe Lockhart.
Kerry's sunk.
Sandy Berger hired Joe Lockhart last January when he became aware the FBI was investigating his document theft.
Lockhart should be asked if he's still on Berger's payroll in addition to (formally) joining the Kerry team.
Great. The return of the Bug-eyed moron.
I am suspicious about the timing of this.
John O'Neill is an attorney. From what I've seen of his appearances, I'll bet he's top-notch.
They know what they're doing. I've no doubt they're ready for the Kerry Karnival.
I'm quite certain that O'Neill is, himself, a highly respected Texas lawyer, so hopefully, he KNOWS which good guys can stand by him and the other Swift Boat Vets.......besides, these guys have become as much of heroes to ALOT of Americans as our President has........we're not going to let them down either!!!!! ;^)
Shouldn't there be some kind of Joe Lockhart pout alert on this one? Lockhart just acts like such a big baby. But then after getting upset in the wake of addressing the VFW, that is what Kerry is acting like too.
Thank you, thank you, for this link. This ad is absolutely stunning. It made me tear up.
Sounds like McCurry decided not to get involved, so they went with Clinton's #2 spokesman...
I've heard the new commercial is devastating (reading other freeper responses because I haven't seen it yet). We're in SC so there's no reason to run the ad here - we're solid Bush country.
I had forgotten O'Neil is an attorney but regardless, an attorney representing himself and all that...
I think they are going to stand strong and have great success. That being said, I'd much prefer to focus on Kerry's Senate record and his words and actions after he returned from Vietnam.
From what I gather, the new commercial does just that and uses POWs who felt betrayed by Kerry, and rightly so. I thought it was traitorous.
Ole Bug Eyes is back!
Wait till they get a dose of the new Swifties ad...
