Hi all,
We're planning a major overhaul of the way the site uses forums, topics and keywords. In short, we're going to flatten out the structure, merging those three distinct indexes into a single index and reorganize some URLs.
What we'll end up with are articles with one or more "categories." Basically a hybrid forum, topic or keyword.
Comments and articles will be associated with a Primary Category (or Home Category?) which is similar to how they are associated with a forum now. You can browse comments in a Primary Category just as you would browse comments in a forum now. The primary distinction, other than programming, is that anybody will be able to create new "forums" by creating new keywords.
We'll probably have these changes installed either tonight or tomorrow night, I've yet to finish the programming.
I'll update this article in about an hour. I have to make a prior engagement, but wanted to get the information out now--just in case I can pull it together tonight.
We'll be down for about half an hour while I update the database. Again, that should be either tonight or tomorrow night. I'll post a notice when I'm certain.
Am I logged on?
Woohoo we get to add a forum just for Kerry's lies.
Should I set my beeber on stune?
It will take me some time to visualize this before I can offer intelligent comment. Is there an analog anywhere else on the Internet that can be proffered an an example of what you intend to do?
Something like:
That would make things much nicer than the current 'threads' view.

Tsk. Another pointless vanity. :^)
Oh, my. How many variations of "beeber" can we record as keywords before we get stuned?
This is Bush's fault. He knew.
Is this gonna be like what they do to us at work, which is to take away some of what we use, change the procedure for the rest, and give us extra new stuff we don't want?
Rock Climbing..
Yes. Rock Climbing. ;^)
John, I'd like to say that the installation of the new database server went extremely well. No (or insignificant) down time and the system performance seems to have improved quite a bit. Analyzing the server stats over the next few days should prove that out. Thanks for doing a great job! Looking forward to the new software features.
Im questioning the timing of this change...!
I personally welcome any changes and updates you need to make in order to streamline things and make the site more user friendly. Looking forward to seeing what else you have in store!
Thanks again for making FR such a great place.
Hmmm.... Reminds me of when we let people start their own topics and ended up with several hundred "forums".
Slightly different spellings and nomenclature were the main problem I think.
My favorite old topic: Daily Index
How will the changes affect the current system of categorizing? Will the existing keywords and topic categories remain or will they be lost?
For example, to find a thread regarding my scoundrel of a congressman, Jim Moran will the currents threads with the keyword "JIMMORAN" still turn up? Or under a topic search of "Virginia" ? Thanks!
