WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. (Nasdaq:AAPL) has agreed to recall about 28,000 batteries used in its 15-inch PowerBook G4 laptop computers, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday.
The batteries, made by LG Chem Ltd. (051910.KS) of South Korea, could overheat and pose a fire hazard, the CPSC said.
"Apple is not financially responsible for this recall," Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said.
Apple has received four reports of overheating though no injuries have been reported, the consumer protection agency said.
The recall affects laptops sold since January which contain batteries made during the last week of December 2003 only.
The batteries have the model number A1045 and serial numbers that begin with HQ404, HQ405, HQ406, HQ407 or HQ408.
Consumers should stop using the recalled batteries immediately and contact Apple at 800 275-2273 or (http://www.apple.com/support/powerbook/batteryexchange), the CPSC said.
Yes, it's still under warranty, and I went to the Chicago Apple store and was shown how to turn things off or delete them, but I still can't get more than 2:20 on a full battery. Thanks for the post.
Most of my best work is done before noon. And Windows does perform well past then (if you're in a pinch)...
Do you live in or near New Jersey?
As far as I know, Windows doesn't have any fire or explosion problems. Apple really can't say the same - eh?
Ap le
This problem has nothing to do with the OS.
Li-Ion batteries are a huge problem just waiting to 'splode onto the front pages. It's kinda surprising that it has taken so long to surface. Sure, they're nice and they give way more battery life than previous iterations... but they do have a tendency to catch fire when any sort of trauma happens to the unit.
If you doubt it... find yourself a wide open space like an empty parking lot. Take a Li-Ion battery pack and smack it really hard with a hammer and a centerpunch right in the middle of one of the cells... enough to punch a hole in the case. Then stand back.
Of course the right answer is: "don't do that". These battery packs can be safely used by millions of people as long as they don't abuse them.
28,000 folks calling their local fire department may disagree. No power - no OS - eh?
At this point, Windows ROCKS!
I like Windows just fine. XP pro may be the best product that the Lazy-M ranch has produced in years. I like Apple Os X too. I like Linux (at least, a couple of the distros). Each has its purpose and advantages.
But for a an OS to put on the laptop for an exec than travels and has only a neophyte understanding of computers?? WinXP is the only possible choice. Anything else is dreamland.

Oops.
Damn right they get hot.
Fire in the hole?
Stink different.
LOL!
I was SOOOOOO tired last night, and typing fast.
I'm in Michigan.
I ordered my replacement battery from their website yesterday (8/19), and received it about 24 hours later.
That's the old way. These days the price for what you get in Apple hardware is competitive. It was a surprise to me too when it happened.
Stay safe - stick with, well, is there any laptop made that doesn't have batteries made cheaply in some foreign country?
Belated Mac Ping.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping Lisit, freepmail me.
