Just spoke to a co-worker who's a Vietnam Vet...
Self

Posted on 08/19/2004 3:14:41 PM PDT by dmanLA

I asked him if he had friends that are Vietnam Vets. He said yes. So I followed up by asking how his friends feel about Kerry. "All of them think he's a jerk," was the reply.

Where does Kerry get these Vets to support him? Is he paying them?

I think its the vet you don't agree with, not me. I know the N. Vietnamese were animals.

This vet would probably say the N.Vietnamese were defending against some imperialist goal of the U.S. or some tripe like that.

My husband is a Viet Nam Veteran, he was a Staff Sargent in charge of a platoon, not for 4 months but for a year. He did not see any atrocities. He got medals but did not come home and throw them away. He did not come home and talk against our government. His country called and he went. Husband is not voting for Kerry.

Those North Viet Namese were defending their country just like you and I wou if some bastards invaded us. They were gutsy hard assed little guys and after all is said and done I respect them for defending their country.

One small problem. The NVA were invading South Vietnam. Initially, there was the pretense that the Viet Cong (South Vietnamese Communists) were engaged in a civil war. The North Vietnames were not defending their country. They wanted to take the South over, the same way North Korea tried to take over South Korea. They weren't successful but Ho Chi Minh was.

South Vietnam. They weren't "defending thier country", they were invading a soveriegn nation.

Maybe you can answer a question. Did we have a treaty with South Viet Nam, like SEATO or something? If so, we were honor and duty bound to come to the defense of the south.

The reason his vets are sticking with him is thast they think they will get to the WH and get to hang around with movers and shakers and pretty girls. They like that more than they want to be honest. Kerry will be blackmail bait for them at some point when you think about it.

I agree with the sentiment - and I also respect kerry for the courage of his convictions by going to vietnam - even though his convictions were selfish and not patriotic.

But that being said, even though I respected the North Vietamese soldier - I still KILLED him since he was my enemy!

Kerry can thank the goodness of most american military personnel that we, so far, only consider him a selfish socialist coward.

This is an example of the poor state of history teaching in this country. When Pres. Nixon signed the peace treaty with the North Vietnam delegation that led to the end of the war and the removal of the American forces he assured the South Vietnam people that, in the event North Vietnam invaded, the US would come to their aid and drive them out again. When the North invaded, the Democrat controlled Congress, with John Kerry's testimony in mind, did not authorize any funding for the rescue of South Vietnam. The result is the infamous bug-out of the Saigon embassy, the deaths of millions of Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Laotians, and thousands of "boat people" fleeing the region. This is the true legacy of John Kerry and the so-called "peace" movement.

within SF he was the guy who wrote reports, and wrote up medals, things like that. In other words, a clerk.

Just got to that thread myself, and was headed over to correct my earlier post to you when I saw your response.

I am a Vet, although not Vietnam era, and I have been an S-1. If the info is true, Rassman indeed probably was a loser. I had an A/S-1 for awhile, but that was so he could learn the ropes before I went off to CASC3 for six weeks or whatever it was. I'll be very interested to hear more on Mr. Rassman career.

Here and there I'll have to bring myself up to speed. I lived through that time with a husband in the service. To be honest, there were a lot of things I did not want to know.

Was there or was there not a treaty with the south in place when the north invaded in 19?? . . . ?

That time of my life was awful. I had a husband in the service and was totally unprepared for what happened in those years and after. Only now am I able to look at some of the rest of it.

I knew those ugly protests were going on, but for some reason I blanked them out.

It was only my husband who was in the service, but sometimes I feel like I made a sacrifice, too. And, no, I never questioned the rightness or wrongness of the war at the time.

Sorry I went off topic. I guess the biggest reason why those Swift Vets resonate with me is that my husband did the same thing as Kerry did, enlisted the day after he got his draft notice to get a better deal, served honorably, lucked out by serving stateside, every night couldn't sleep worrying he'd have to go, it was a difficult time. None of my friends', and I had a lot at the time, husbands had to serve but one that I can remember who was in ROTC reserves. When I see film of those college kids protesting, it makes me mad because I know that they had college deferrments, mostly because their parents bought them out of the war that way, just as my friends' husbands go out of it. College deferments>baby.

I know the wonderful young people who had their lives turned upside down who had to go.

I don't think I could handled knowing more about it at the time and it was so ugly what went on, that it made me ill to read about it.

As an addendum, many people have this vision of pajama clad guerilla fighters 'taking their country back.'

Bah.

From my reading, the Viet Cong were finished as an effective force after Tet. From then on, it was North Vietnamese Regulars.

Saigon fell to a column of Soviet and Chinese armor LARGER THAN PATTON'S RED BALL EXPRESS. Thanks to our peace loving congress, the ARVN was down to two clips and two grenades per man. The hospitals were re-using sterile dressings. They asked for the help they were owed, by treaty. They were denied. Congress had other things on their collective mind. Nixon's proverbial blood being one of them.

Kerry's Viet Nam experience will shape his foreign policy? Delightful! From that, I can infer that we will abandon our allies in Afghanistan and Iraq to the tender mercies of the Islamofascists, all the while coming up with new social programs on which to spend the 'peace dividend.'

He volunteered to go to VN. I do not know if he was a "1049 volunteer" like myself, but he went nonetheless. That in and of itself, says something about the man. He certainly didn't go for the $. My first month's pay was $68. I refuse to believe he did it for the "fame." There was none. Many KIA. Many WIA. Many with severe, crippling injuries that prematurely claimed their lives.

Constant exposure to Blackwater fever, malaria, amoebic dysentery, hepatitis, diarrhea, vomiting, herbicides,c-rats, worms, infections, blood-poisoning. Fame?

After he came back and denounced us as "murderers, rapists , and corpse mutilators?" He can go to Utah and pound salt. I wouldn't vote for the SOB for dog-catcher in Detroit, unless all the dogs were Pitbulls.

Lastly, all voters should focus on his record in Washington. He voted for 80 tax increases and rates an F from GOA. Either one of those issues cost him my vote, even if he single-handedly had taken Dong Ap Bia Mountain...
