Death row inmate attacks guard

HOUSTON – A death row inmate being escorted to his cell turned around suddenly and stabbed a prison guard 13 times with a sharpened metal rod, but the wounds were not considered serious, a prison spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The inmate, Jorge Salinas, was sentenced to lethal injection for the 2001 deaths of a 29-year-old man and a 21-month-old girl during a carjacking in Hidalgo County.

"His cell had just been searched and he was irate," Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons said. She said Salinas used a rod from a typewriter that he was allowed to use.

As two guards escorted Salinas on Monday night, he began swinging his hand at one of the officers, Lyons said. As the officer blocked the blow, Salinas produced the 6 ½-inch rod and began stabbing the 24-year-old correctional officer, Lyons said.

Other officers subdued Salinas using a chemical agent, she said.

The guard was taken from the prison unit in Livingston to the Polk County Hospital, where his puncture wounds were cleansed. Lyons said he is doing fine.

The inmate was not injured during the scuffle and has been placed in a higher level of custody. He also has lost his privileges to use items such as a typewriter and radios, Lyons said.

The search of Salinas' cell was routine, Lyons said, adding that officers search all inmates cells to "make sure they do not possess contraband, including weapons."

Lyons said the attack was being investigated.

"When you are talking about a death row inmate, there is not much you can do," she said. "You really cannot stack anything more on that sentence. It will be reflected on his record and that will be something that stays with him."

Convicted killers sent to Texas' death row spend 23 hours a day alone in a concrete wall cell with one hour for recreation. There are 456 offenders awaiting execution.

Salinas, 20, arrived on Texas' death row in 2002.

He was convicted in the slaying of Geronimo Morales, who was carjacked on his way to a quinceanera, driven to an isolated orchard and fatally shot in the head with a shotgun. His daughter, Leslie Ann, was abandoned that same night and died.

Border Patrol agents found the girl dead in her car seat at a park near the Rio Grande. Agents said she was strapped in the seat and hidden in some brush.

Note the date of the murders was July 28, 2001. I'm not sure what the official cause of death was for the baby, but you can imagine it must've been unmercifully hot out there in that field for her.

Can't say any more, or I'd be locked up for sure.

A 6 1/2 inch rod. When will the prison staff ever learn.

OTOH, I think that we should be able to find something to make this guys life a little more uncomfortable.

Let's move up that execution date. He is obviously guilty, unrepentant, and ready to meet his maker.

For thought we cannot judge his soul, we can certainly judge him unfit to live on our society. Perhaps we can offer him to the French on a prisoner exchange program.

Ask the prison guard if he thinks the stabbings were serious.

This guy should be making big rocks into small rocks until they execute him. Not enough small rocks--not so much dinner.

21 month old child was strapped in the seat and hidden in some brush to die after seeing her father's head blown off.

Anyone else see the news segment on the Latino crime wave on one of the talking head shows last night? It was great that they had someone (an attrative conservative woman) speaking completely analytically about the huge amount of Latino crime and surge in Latino gangs. She pointed out that the 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants figure in this as well, it's over simlistic to say it's only illegals. Awesome segment. (MS-NBC?)

This guy is the poster child. Love the little gang signifying tatoos on the neck.

There are 456 offenders awaiting execution.

There are at least 456 families being denied justice.

Holy Merde! Mad Props for this prison guard!!!!

If someone kills a child I think there needs to be a 'Death Penalty VIP-Express Lane'.

(VIP = Very Immoral Person)

Me too. It's killing me to think how that baby must've suffered out there all alone, strapped in her car seat. Maybe wild animals attacked her. Maybe she died of heat stroke, exposure, thirst . . . who knows? I'm totally disgusted by it, is all I should say about it right now.

There are over 7,900 awaiting death on Death Row, nationally.

"... families being denied justice."

Yes, I agree. Kill all the perps, ASAP.

I think it would be fair to allow the guard Jorge stabbed to try as many times as necessary to interest the needle for Jorge's final event.

This goes in the file for why life imprisonment may not be a good alternative to "buh-bye!"

You should get one appeal and then that’s it. I know that maybe some who are innocent may be killed but when you look at how many people are murdered by people out on parole it’s a regrettable statistic I’m willing to, no pun intended, live with.
