Rumsfeld Says US Forces "Unlikely" To Storm Holy Places In Najaf
Agence France-Presse | August 17, 2004

WASHINGTON, Aug 17 (AFP) - US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said late Tuesday that US troops pressing an offensive in Najaf against an anti-government militia led by radical Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr were "unlikely" to storm the Iraqi town`s holy places where the militants are holed up.

"It`s unlikely that the US forces would be the ones that would deal with the holy places," Rumsfeld said, appearing on PBS`s "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" program.

"That`s just not something that we are likely to do," he continued. "I would think that the Iraqi forces would be the ones that would deal with that because it`s such a significant thing to the religion."

Well then lets just hope the Iraqis do what needs to be done.

Iraqi soldiers are not going to want to do that in their own holy shrine.

And who said we aren't fighting a sensitive war on terror?

If we storm in there, shoot the place up, and/or blow it to hell, then Sadr wins even if he is turned into a fine red mist. It would tick off so many Iraqis that we'd have to deal with uprising all over the place.

If anyone is going to storm the shrines, let the Iraqis be the ones to do it.

Allowing terrorists to seek refuge in it is part of our Sensitive War on Terror.

And John Kerry says he's going to be even more sensitive.

Maybe we can all have a sensitivity party.

I say flood the place, then drop live electrical wires into the water.

It's worked before.

its a strategic decision - we don't need to be seen as the ones who cause this place to blow up, we don't need a general uprising amongst the Shia.

CALL IN THE GHOST RIDER'S (AC-130 SPECT), MAKE IT A "REAL HOLEY" PLACE.

20mm, 40mm, & 105's raining from heaven above....Make'em think Allah is shooting.

This sort of story reminds me of the old Saturday Night Live skit during the first Gulf War. The reporters are questioning the military asking, "What are our greatest weaknesses and how could the enemy best exploit them?" Like Rumsfeld is going to give a straight answer to any questions regarding strategy. 24 hours from now, I hope he's standing there saying, "We stormed the place. I lied. Deal with it."

Special Ops ... tamper with the water supply ? I understand it's not just a mosque but more of a big open compound which some have reported as already wired for demolition by the crazies.

THE LIB'S WOULD RAISE HELL, JUST AS IF WE had the Iraqi's gas them.,

I think were being to sensitive....Aren't the bombing Christian Churches all over the world.

i think the AC-130 would be less painful, and much faster.

the longer we let these crazy men play games the stronger they get the WEAKER we get. Maybe it would teach them not to hide there the NEXT TIME. No more of the NONSENSE.

If soviets new we fought like this, they would not have build nukes they would have build churches around the world.
and cried FOUL.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO REMEMBER, GOD IS IN MAN'S HEART, RELIGION AND BUILDINGS ARE MANMADE, GOD GIVES MAN THE STRENGH TO REBUILD.

Yeah, but we need to kill Sadr, not "involve him in the process."

We screwed up royally when we didn't kill him when we had (several) chances to do it.

That chicken is coming home to roost.

America NEVER learns her lessons.
