Alcoa Inc. will close an automotive components factory in Ohio and lay off its staff in a bid to cut excess capacity, the Pittsburgh-based company said Tuesday.
Alcoa said it would close the Northwood, Ohio, facility by the end of 2004 and take a total of $7 million in charges related to the move. Closing the plant will put 140 people out of work.
Alcoa, the world's largest aluminum producer but also a manufacturer of other goods, said it would record $3 million of the charges in the third quarter.
"Unfortunately, the excess capacity in our system and the specific capabilities of this facility made this move necessary," vice president of operations and engineering for Alcoa Advanced Transportation Systems Eric Winter said Tuesday afternoon.
"We are working with our customers to insure supply and service is not impacted during this consolidation," Mr. Winter added.
Alcoa said it would work with community and Ohio officials to ease the impact of the plant's closing. Those steps could include finding a buyer for the facility that could retain jobs, but Alcoa did not provide details.
Employees who lose their jobs will receive outplacement packages, including severance pay and benefits extensions.
Prozac alert!
But we didn't put that news in the paper so Willie missed it.
And these 140 people can never find another job or start their own business because?????
I do wonder why it seems like every company that has plants in several states, one of which is Ohio, always closes the one in Ohio.
Why do i get the feeling these jobs are going to China.
China is now importing cars in the U.S. I would never let China do that. They'll dump the cars in here and it will be the end of GM, Chrysler and Ford.

If shutting down plants is such a hoot for guys like you as you ship jobs to China, Why don't you pack and move to China? If their money is good, perhaps you'd better like their government ethic. Afterall, ethics and business don't mix with your sort..
I wish I did have the power to "ship jobs" anywhere.
alas, I do not.
I hear Lou Dobbs does, though.
