A new poll commissioned by the National Jewish Democratic Council says American Jews will still vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic presidential candidate, John Kerry, despite US President George W. Bush's policies toward Israel, which have been widely praised by the Jewish community.
The poll, released on Monday, said American Jews preferred Kerry to Bush by a 75 to 22 percent margin. The survey of 817 likely Jewish voters was conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research between July 26 and 28, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percent.
Respondents said in 2000 they had voted for Vice President Al Gore over Bush by a similar margin of 76 to 21 percent.
Exit polls in 2000 showed Gore won 79 percent of the Jewish vote, and Bush 19 percent.
"The White House and (President Bush's political adviser) Karl Rove in particular have expended a lot of resources on this Jewish vote. Just like with Hispanics, they've come up with zero," said Ira Forman, executive director of NJDC.
Matthew Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, a rival group, discounted the survey's results since the poll was taken during the Democratic Convention in Boston.
"I discount these findings because this poll was taken right in the middle of the Democratic Convention, right in the middle of a massive deluge of Kerry press coverage," Brooks said.
"We stand firmly committed to the notion that President Bush will do substantially better among Jewish voters than he did in 2000," Brooks added.
Another survey of American Jewish opinion in January found that 31 percent of Jews would support Bush when matched with Kerry, who was not yet the nominee at the time.
The new NJDC survey said 66 percent found Kerry to be better on the issue of Israel, while 34 percent found Bush to be. Only 23 percent of respondents felt the country was moving in the right direction, while 77 percent said it was on the wrong track. Twenty-five percent approved strongly or somewhat of the way Bush is handling his job as president, while 75 percent disapproved strongly or somewhat.
A new national Zogby survey released Monday showed Kerry ahead of Bush 47 to 43 percent. Without Independent Ralph Nader and other candidates the lead stretched to 50 to 43 percent.
Serve who right? Israelis, who don't have a vote in U.S. elections?
Israeli adults choose President Bush over Senator Kerry by a margin of 48% to 29%, according to a poll released last week in Israel.
Among Likud voters, the result was Bush 69% / Kerry 18%.

What are you saying, one vote in person and another absentee vote in the other state?
See my #81.
"Interesting that a Jewish group is more concerned with the results of a poll than which candidate would be best for the group's interests."
Not at all surprising to me. American liberal Jews are suicidal in the extreme. While they do not profess a hatred of Israel their actions tend to be more anti-Israel and anti-Jewish than any "hate" group I can think of. They support Nazi-style gun bans, a Nazi-style police state, Nazi-style propaganda (Jews own or control over 70% of mass media outlets...just a statistical fact folks, not me being a Nazi okay?), and Nazi-style socialism (government 'partnering' with private industry for the 'common good').
It never fails to amaze me that Christian fundamentalists are uniformly more pro-Jewish than Jews as a demographic.
Reagan got 40% of the Jewish vote and Bush will get at least that. Why believe some DNC-like poll???
Hi ac -- I think between the two of us, we have spotted a voting trend up close and personal. And the people I was talking about were all in NYC, from which I just moved two weeks ago. Great "about" page you have, by the way!! Although I have to admit I spend less time yelling at the TV since coming on to FR during Clinton's scandalous reign.
Look at who is sponsoring the poll. Don't worry.
I know one more, but he votes R and thinks liberal socially. He compartmentalizes things.
I despise comments like this. Lumping all Jews together is as odious as lumping all Christians together.
Yep. Agitprop from the left. Remember a month or so ago in Florida? The Rats were all atwitter over W (or Cheney) getting an audience or endorsed by a large, non-partisan Jewish group. The times are a changing and W is going to do (relatively) well with the Jewish vote this time round...
I don't buy the poll. As a 44 year old AMERICAN Jew I support Bush. Infact I have financially sent my money off to Many Republican causes including President Bush. I am a card carrying member of the "REPUBLICAN JEWISH COALITION" http://rjchq.org
Yes, there are many left leaning Jews who are misguided in this world but there are just as many who are RIGHT in their views. Sometimes the Jewish community is too passive and you only hear from those what are left as they want you to think they are the Majority of the Jewish community. They are not. Maybe its a NY Jew who is to the left but not the Midwest Jew.
Sounds like they got the poll results they paid for.

Founded in 1990, the National Jewish Democratic Council is the national voice of Jewish Democrats. Informed by our commitment to those values shared by the Democratic Party and the vast majority of American Jews - including the separation of church and state, a strong US-Israel relationship, and reproductive freedom...
Sorry; make that http://www.townhall.com/columnists/dennisprager/dp20030121.shtml
You hit it right.........Look who put the poll out.... Fifty percent of my Jewish Friends have publiclly stated that we need four more years of President Bush.
The answer is a easy one. It hit me like a ton of bricks the day after slick beat Bob Dole in 96.
Its the same reason the antichrist will fool so many people, even those who should know better. The devil has decieved them. They are blinded because of their unbelief.
They actually still think if they give the palis what they want there will bepeace.
WWJD?
I think this poll is actually good news. 34 percent of American Jews now recognize that Republicans are better than Democrats on Israel. Since only 19 percent of Jews voted for Bush last time, I bet there's an awakening going on. Also, considering the source of this poll, I bet the percentages are even better.
Hey Rummyfan -- I just moved to Boston -- I live about a 10-minute walk from Kerry's home -- if we lose on November 2, just pass me some of the hemlock. If we have this thing wrapped up by 9 Eastern, I am going to be strutting up Beacon Hill, gloating ostentatiously and laughing loudly at the tears of the leftist Stepford zombies who dominate this place.
