Thanks so much for your "man on the Greek street" report. It was fascinating. I hope you will be able to give us some more reports.

As for the British reporter sneaking in with a fake bomb or something to that effect that was snuck into a secure area. He is full of excrement. You don’t sneak anywhere here

Yup, security is as tight as a drum

Besure to read the posts on the thread addressed to me--they were all mistakenly posted to me instead of you.

BTW, what are the traffic conditions like in Athens? I've heard that they drive in the shade, rather than on the right or the left.

Actually, I think the glassed-over sidewalks is an incredible idea. It may seem macabre at first, but no more so than grave-robbing the remains to display them in museums. Kudos to the Greeks for coming up with that (if the idea is original--I've never heard of it being done before).

It is also illegal to wear the flag as apparel:

US Code Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8, subsection (d) reads in part...

"The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery."

On an aside and from the same US Code, subsection (i) reads in part...

"The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard."

Please try and remember that at your next party. Buy the ones with the Statue of Liberty on them and show a bit of respect to Old Glory.

"Most Athenians who do not need to be in Athens have gone on vacation. "

hmmmm.... even the Athenians are not interested in watching the games. Would have thought they might be interested, being Greek and all.

Lots of stretching, and lots of warm-up.

a few replies to some questions:

Speaking of the metro, it is complete clean and actually useful. Clean metro... in Greece?

It is brand new. Its construction is also responsible for a number of discoveries archeological finds.

As for everything looking new - well, sure. Didn't you know? They built all this stuff, just recently. They were in such a hurry with that subway that they just created little museums on the fly. So apparently people are walking up and down the subways like they were in one of the National museums.

The metro has been under construction for years and the inevitable acheological discoveries were part of the construction plan.
There were no "museums" on the fly.
There are permanent displays in the interchange stations where the vaious lines interconnect.

Of particular note is the one at Syntagma, which is the government center station. The displays are open to the public.

The director of the British Underground system came and made a smart *ss comment of "too bad the antiquities could not be viewed in their original location." Obviously he is not familiar with the Elgin Marbles.

regarding man in blue tutu
He was not armed. He did not have anything dangerous.
Unless the blue tutu counts as a weapon of mass absurdity.
If this had been a streaker, How is security supposed to stop a streaker from getting naked?

What are traffic conditions in Athens.
Traffic is actually not bad. The hardest part is dealing with the one way streets. Parking is actually not bad due to the August vacations but is starting to fill up.

Sadly there is a report of a 23 year old Danish Athleat competing in the sailing events of the Games who was charged with manslaughter through negligence. He was charged after he ran over and killed a British tourist on Sunay night. The athleat's name was Nicklas-David Holm. (per greek paper)

Most Athenians who do not need to be in Athens have gone on vacation. "
hmmmm.... even the Athenians are not interested in watching the games. Would have thought they might be interested, being Greek and all.

They are interested, just not everyone can do everything, not everyone is interested in Batmitton.
The page http://www.tickets.athens2004.com/en/ has ticket sales. Where anyone can check availability for a particular event. The media reported that as of yesterday Aug 17, 2004 the targets for ticket sales had been reached.
I have noticed the lines are getting shorter at the ticket booths throughout the city. It is still significant there are still lines even if they are only 20-30 people long.

There is also NBC-free broadcasting of sporting events with Greek competitors. So nobody is missing the home team efforts.

with regards to the flag as cape.
Anyone may decide for themselves. However, in this instance the specific display of the flag around your neck is a means of displaying national pride and showing your nation's presence at a sporting event. I am not defending just reporting.

Greek morning TV was discussing briefly how American Athleats are being "hidden" in Crete.

Sounds valid since the USA's Herakleon Air Force Base is there.

I don't have more details on this. Just FYI.

later.

The games are going well.

The resignation of the two greek athleats is seen as a good thing. In essence everyone here is glad it is over. (they also don't believe their "accident" on the motorcycle")

Costas Kenderis, the male sprinter, announced he is dropping his coach.

Ticket sales will hit 3.5 million, exceeding prior games.

The real sport is the olympic sized partying that is going on. After thise games are over, there is going to be one massive collective hangover. There are free concerts all over the city every night.

Does anyone know a free server I can use to post pictures to FR?

The media here is obsessing with the doping of athleats and how athleats believe they can always eveade doping control.

Recent catch was a hungarian discus thrower who had a bottle of urine stashed next to his privates inside his clothing. Doping control asked for a second sample and he refused, he did not have enough "clean urine". The fact theses athleats are getting caught should be a positive story.

By the way, Athens is CROWDED! The city is bustling.

Some CNN austrailian reporter SUCKERED his bosses for a free trip to Crete to "look for the Greeks". CNN must have real idiot suckers on their producer schedules.

They greek media here also showed the offices of Christos Jako being raided and compurters and papers being removed. The nickname of Jako among athleats is "the dealer".

The bigest real news is that there is no news and the hundreds of reporters who were praying for a disaster did not get their little leftist wish.

Speaking of leftists, the socialist party of Greece is trying to blame the Conservative and ruling New Democracy party for the athleate's doping. (ala it is all George Bush's fault)

The media really needs to cover the concerts and the parties. It really is full throttle partying.

Till next time.

Hello again. A brief party update and potential protest HEADS UP.

Today is the aftermath of another celebration for a Greek gold medal win for women's hurdles. (english speaking reporters are straaaaaaaing to not say an up from behind win. ha ha.)

This is not be be confused with the REGULAR celebrating for any number of excuses every night.

This is HEADS UP part of the post for potential protesters in Athens. At least the anarchists are going to try.

There are posters and handbills popping up outside the secure areas saying there is a protest scheduled for tommorrow which will end up outside the US embasy.

The advertisements are from the same people who bring the anti-WTO organizations. It is also suspicous because the handbills being passed out are in english. (as opposed to being in greek when passed out in Greece.)

Some of the posters on the walls show a picture of Colin Powel. (silly protestors, the best source of anti-americanism IS the state department)

This potential protest should really please the news crews who are wandering around aimlessly in athens. In fact, I even had a chance to snap a shot of an NBC camera crew plotzed out in front of a story near the Monasteraki shopping district. Too bad they are working because there are missing the street performers and revelers. I even say a troop of mayan indian dancers (some wearing american indian headresses) performing in front of Parlament square. It must have been past NBC's bed time.

A footnote, some of the athleats will have to leave their olive wreaths behind due to import laws. Sad, there should be a way for athleats to take their crowns home.
