Keyes has plans for reparations

One day after their first meeting, U.S. Senate hopefuls Barack Obama and Alan Keyes were back on the campaign trail again Monday.

Speaking at a news conference at the Hotel InterContinental in Chicago, Republican Keyes added to his now familiar talking points his stance on slavery reparations.

Prompted by a reporter's question, Keyes gave a brief tutorial on Roman history and said that in regard to reparations for slavery, the U.S. should do what the Romans did: "When a city had been devastated [in the Roman empire], for a certain length of time--a generation or two--they exempted the damaged city from taxation."

Keyes proposed that for a generation or two, African-Americans of slave heritage should be exempted from federal taxes--federal because slavery "was an egregious failure on the part of the federal establishment." In calling for the tax relief, Keyes appeared to be reaching out to capture the black vote, something that may prove difficult to do, particularly after his unwelcome reception at the Bud Billiken Day Parade Saturday...

ALAN KEYES: "Obama is a liberal socialist, he has never seen a spending bill he couldn't find some excuse for, and has never seen a tax increase he didn't like, would rather that our children were educated in schools controlled by impersonal bureaucracy than in schools under the influence and control of the parents who love them, he is a gun-grabber who definies the Second Amendment, Obama is pro-abortion and supports infanticide..."

KEYES BASHING "REPUBLICANS" ON FR: "UNELECTABLE KOOK!! Alan Keyes is a right-wing extremist!! He's a single issue abortion candidate, that's ALL he ever talks about! He'll never win on that issue! Why doesn't he talk about ILLINOIS issues?! Why doesn't he take some MODERATE positions, that's the only way to WIN in a state like Illinois! Why doesn't he do something to reach out to seniors, and suburban women and minorities?!

ALAN KEYES (continued): "...and by the way, I don't like Obama's stance on the LOCAL O'Hare airport issue HERE IN ILLINOIS. It seems to me that anyone who wants to spent $15 billion on both O'Hare expansion AND building ANOTHER airport in Peotone is wasting money and trying to please all sides. I'm also a moderate on immigration, I'm against illegal immigration but I support more people coming here legally, because America is a nation of immigrats... if there's one issue where I agree with my opponent, it's on drug importation from Canada for seniors...and I'm against the federal government making taxpayers foot the bill for reparations, but I support tax cuts for minorities who come from slave ancestry..."

KEYES BASHING "REPUBLICANS" ON FR: "UNELECTABLE KOOK!! Alan Keyes is no longer a Republican, he has BETRAYED the principles of the party!! Why is he refusing to hold conservative positions on one or two issues?! He'll NEVER win over THOSE kinds of voters, they are rock-solid for Obama!! Why doesn't he talk about NATIONAL issues?! Why doesn't he do something to reach out to the base of the party, who have supported him all these years?!

Gee, something tells me the Keyes hating RINOs will attack Alan no matter HOW he runs his campaign, whether he takes a "conservative" OR a "moderate" position.

Now why would that be?

In a completely unrelated story, the same liberal media who attacked the "hypocritical" Republicans who stood by Arnold during his campaign are now attacking the "ultra right-wing, derisive" Keyes because he stood against Arnold during his campaign.

They're so consistant, aren't they?

>> Another thing that has been constant on this forum is freedom of speech, but several folks dreamed up defenses to CFR when that crap got passed. <<

The centrist RAT Senator from Georgia votes for CFR and freepers turn the other cheek and proclaim he's "more conservative than most yankee Republicans" and the only "true conservative" for Bush at the GOP convention.

The conservative GOP Senator from Illinois, with a 91% rating from the ACU, votes for ONE CFR bill and freepers proclaim he's a worthless RINO and losing his Senate seat is no big deal cuz ANYONE from Illinois with an "R" next to their name is a liberal, dontsa know (Henry Hyde, John Shimkus, Don Manzullo, all lefties apperently)

Dontsa love how freepers hold people to the SAME standards?

Thank you Dr. Keyes for clarification. It's great to see there are other topics to discuss other than who's having the latest sex scandal.

No, no, no... what we want is another go-along-to-get-along GOP'er in the US Senate! {/sarcasm}

I'm not a resident of Illinois, so it isn't an issue for me about whether or not to vote for him.

My concern is that Keyes just brought this idea into mainstream discussion. It will have consequences outside of Illinois. I am not pleased that he has just volunteered a new way for the Liberals of my state to screw WA residents. Even worse, to do so by race. Frankly, they cause enough damage on their own.

Jim Robinson has a very interesting post here. I believe he is one of the, if not *THE*, most reasonable and fair Conservatives I've been around in my lifetime. His whole family and team are true American Conservative patriot icons of my lifetime.

But the problem in raising the native american experience in this case, which is admittedly unique, is that to an extent reparations WERE made with the establishment of the Indian Reservation system.

Ok, then I want to make a new proposal - one grounded in applicable precedent: All African Americans who want reparations because of the legacy of slavery can be rounded up and forced at gunpoint to inhabit reservations on land that we as a society have deemed worthless to us.

Then, and only then, will I agree to the idea of reparations.

o in that respect, the native american experience and the setup of the reservation system (right or wrong) is actually a historical precedent for some kind of reparations for slaves. It isn't part of a case against slave reparations - in fact, it's part of the case for it.

Agreed - so, they can have the same reparations that we got.

Now, we are in agreement ;0)

You're a bystander, a delusional fool who believes that wars can be won by retreating from the battle field.

There's nothing inherently evil about conservatism, so you can quit imagining yourself some dark avenger for truth and Justice...you're just what Reagan called "a radical conservative" with quite an amount of disdain; there is something however quite amusing at the "holier than thou" types who take to the sidelines and critique those still fighting the war.

"Republican" is the party affiliation, and I am a dues paying, poll-working, standing-on-a-street-corner-waving-a-Bush/Cheney-sign, bona fide member of the Grand Old Party, whose principles will not allow for Democrats being elected as a result of my lack of action due to immature, uninformed hissy fits over whether things are being done my way or not.

"Republican In Name Only"?

Hardly...

I am a Republican, and we all know what YOU are.

Provide a link to that quote, or retract it boy.

Haha! All kidding aside, I think we probably agree on most things and don't agree on this aspect of slave reparations. Fair enough - reasonable people can disagree!

Keep the faith pallie!

Someone earlier brought up projection, which I believe all RINOs do...

I work for a Constitutional Republican Party, not one leading us at a slower pace than the RATS to the DIPRA (DemocRATic Islamic People's Republic of Amerika, which RINOs, CINOs and RATs alike all are leading us to.

I have found it more effective for me personally as an Independent Conservative soldier, or mercenary when I'm on vacation, and I am not overt in anything I do.

I've found RINOs are...and maybe you like the thought or maybe you don't, but Conservatives could leave the GOP as a VOTING block, and THEN the RINOs and RATs will complete the destruction of America. So, you keep bashing Conservatives up real good LG.

On what do base the conclusion that reparations will be the end of the hand outs?

Only that the idea of reparations is to make whole. I agree, even if the rest of the pipe-dream came true, it would not be the end of hand outs. Hence the hypocrisy.

The Constitutional Republican Party?

You're not leading anyone anywhere at any time.

The difference between you and insignificance is access to the Internet.

Well, it looks like Keyes has "clarified" his position, based on a statement his campaign just released (there's a thread on it running) where he says that we should be "removing the tax burden from the black community for a generation or two"...

So, now it IS a race-based distinction... Sigh...
