August 17, 2004 -- PUNTA GORDA, Fla. Survivors of Hurricane Charlie, many of whom lost their homes and all their possessions, had a manmade scourge to contend with yesterday heartless looters. The fear of looting was so widespread, many victims were staying in their damaged homes without electricity, water or in some cases, even roofs to protect what's left.At the Harborview Park mobile-home community, Peter Fernandes said the lock to his mom's home had been jimmied.
"Sons of bitches," Fernandes told the St. Petersburg Times. "They have no respect of people, even in times like these."
Down the road, Vietnam veteran Gary Snyder told the paper he knew how to handle looters.
"If I see 'em, I'll shoot 'em," he said. "I'll tell 'em I had a flashback."

Anyone remember "Looters will be shot on sight?" Let's bring that back, right now.
I happened to be at Walt Disney World last Friday when the hurricane hit - it was incredible.
I would think looting in Florida, one of the first CCW states would be pretty risky.
During Andrew one of my troops was living down near Homestead. Looters showed up in teams he said. He and his three neighbors had been taking turns guarding their remaining possessions. He said as soon as they saw what the organized teams of looters were up to they engaged the vehicles radiators, engines and tires with rifle fire. Looters left the area on foot , fast !
Local PD showed up two hours later and told em they did good. Duh !
Looters are lower than whale shit..........show no mercy as encountered.
He also had some fun tricks he played on the price gougers.
During the aftermath of Andrew armed gangs were sniping at the National Guard troops because they knew they weren't armed with bullets. FEMA under Clinton.
I hear looting is not widespread... right??
