Are we really willing to do "everything possible" to prevent another 9/11?
08/15/04 | Jim Curtis

We hear highly placed officials and political appointees make pronouncements that "America should do everything" in its power to protect itself from terrorists but we have already decided that we are unwilling to do the only thing that would have clear effectiveness in protecting us from terrorists.

The effectiveness of protective measures descends as:

Removing the wheat ( terrorists ) and the chaff ( innocent members of the group the terrorists belong to ).

Perhaps 75-90% of Americans would reject this "you can't sort them with 100% assuredness so evict them all" option. I'd would currently reject this myself which means that I'm not willing to do "everything" possible to prevent terrorism.

Attempt to separate wheat from chaff

This would require roundups and sorting. Probably 50% of Americans wouldn't have the stomach for it.

Take measures to detect activities of terrorists by detecting suspicious actions focusing on the entire population

Also known as the "Patriot Act". Apparently despised by most liberals and certain conservatives.

Add another bureaucracy with a super-duper magical bureaucrat in charge who we can point the finger at when the next terrorist attack occurs.

This seems to be the option that most on the left are currently pushing.

If one, or many, want to die and take as many of us as possible with them and they are allowed to remain here, there is no way to ultimately stop them.

We can protect "this building" and guard against "that weapon" but we cannot protect all buildings and guard against all weapons just as there is nothing to stop a suicidal maniac from crashing his car into a farmers market so as to become a mass murderer and the top story on the evening news...He merely needs to choose to take that action, there is no defense against it, no Spielbergian "Minority Report" device to stop it.

What prevents them from acting? Fear of reprisal. Fear that we will react by moving to a protective measure that is higher on the list of "effective protective measures" so as to prevent further attacks.

This dynamic changes, the expected reaction to an attack changes, with a new "sensitive" President...as if the current President isn't overly sensitive enough.

"Are we really willing to do 'everything possible' to prevent another 9/11?"

If so, we will re-elect President Bush.

Remember:

9/11 was never repeated--thanks to George W. Bush!
Al-Qaida tried everything, but the terrorists could not outwit President Bush or overcome his constant vigilance!

It's really fairly simple.

1. Secure the borders.

2. Ask ALL non-American citizens to leave our soil, nicely.

3. Demand that ALL non-American citizens leave our soil immediately.

4. Use whatever force is necessary to achieve this objective.

5. This policy stays in place untill the "war on terror" is won.

I have a rock that I have kept since 9/11. I would attribute the lack of terrorist attacks in the US to my pet rock.

No... duh...

I usually don't respond to vanity posts, but this is so strange I'm not sure where the writer is going...

"We can protect "this building" and guard against "that weapon" but we cannot protect all buildings and guard against all weapons"

??? Yes we can - will we? no because we will only be scared so much, because we would rather fight in Najef rather then in Detroit, because we WILL kill them in their own rabbit holes -

Are you saying that there are no terrorists-in-waiting in the US? Thank goodness! I was worried that there were terrorists already here for some reason. Thank you for putting my mind at ease.

...let's sing a happy little song now.

I think we fully understand that going on the offensive in foreign terrorist enclaves is one element in making our homeland safer.

Of course we aren't doing everything possible.

Much that is possible is also against decent humanity and against American principles.

We are doing everything we can REASONABLY and within our convictions to stop terrorism.

9/11 has not yet been repeated.

Actually, an attack using aircraft as missiles is probably the least likely form for the next major attack.

I have very reluctantly reached the conclusion that we will have to lose a city before we get serious about this war.

The good news is that once we do it will be relatively short.

Are you saying that there are no terrorists-in-waiting in the US?"

No I'm not

But are you saying it would not be possible to turn the U.S. into a police state, eject all non-citizens, psycological testing for everyone, confiscation of every weapon, build a wall with landmines and ditches, NO foreign flag vessels allowed, round the clock air patrols ?

It will never happen, as it will end the U.S. as we know it and they will have won by intimidation, but it IS possible...
