Outsourcing has been a hot topic as of late. It's been made even hotter by the fact that 2004 is a Presidential election year. The candidate making the most claims on the dangers of outsourcing has been John F. Kerry. He's mentioned it so much that he might as well trademark the phrase "American Jobs". It was part of his convention speech where called for the closing of tax loopholes "that reward companies for shipping our jobs overseas. Instead, we will reward companies that create and keep good-paying jobs right where they belong -- in the good old U.S.A. We value an America that exports products, not jobs -- and we believe American workers should never have to subsidize the loss of their own job."
It's an issue that's even made it into a Kerry campaign ad, "10 Million Jobs":
Announcer: While jobs are leaving our country in record numbers, George Bush says sending jobs overseas makes sense for America. His top economic advisors say moving American jobs to low cost countries is a plus for the U.S.
John Kerry's proposed a different economic plan that encourages companies to keep jobs here. It's part of a detailed economic agenda to create 10 million jobs. John Kerry. A new direction for America.
Sounds like a serious problem, and that John Kerry is opposed to outsourcing and wants to do what he can to keep jobs in America. If you want to see what kind of jobs have gone overseas, take a look at the following from the website of an American company that helps U.S. businesses set up operations in China:
...US High Technology Corporation's technology transfer efforts in the PRC. Responsible for technology transfer for full-scale manufacturing in China of technologies utilized in telecommunications relays and satellites. Each production package sells for $15-$20 million. The Corporation has successfully transferred these technologies to several Chinese manufacturers now in production.
...Infant Gifts Corporation. As Principal, established alternative China manufacturing. Successfully source all necessary raw materials and established local quality control. Additionally, developed complete business plan and offering document for product line currently selling through 12,000 retail outlets.
...Contract Manufacturer (in China) of products for US home healthcare market. Responsibilities have included: sourcing of raw materials, establishment of local quality control, and manufacturing business plan.
And at the end of the accomplishment list for this company, we see one interesting tidbit:
...China Advisor to U.S. Senator's commercial agenda for China. Advised, assisted, and executed Minister level commercial agenda for U.S. Senator. Advanced Senator in China for all Minister level meetings, coordinated and acted as liaison to: The U.S. State Department, The U.S. Embassy in Beijing, The Department of Commerce, and all relevant Chinese authorities. Acted as commercial delegation leaders in China as well as co-sponsoring and co-organizing a US/China Symposium at Tsinghua University (The "M.I.T. of China.")
That's interesting. This company that is helping move American manufacturing jobs to China is working with a U.S. Senator to help things along. What kind of Senator would help move American Jobs(TM) overseas? Well, let's consider the fact that most senators like to help businesses within their state become more successful. It helps to show the little people back home that you're doing something to help the local economy. And in a twisted way, this senator was, by helping a company called Boston Capital & Technology grow their business of helping move American Jobs(TM) to China.
Boston Capital & Technology? Well then, the senator is most likely from Massachusetts. But which senator could it be? Since the pictures from the trade mission have mysteriously disappeared from their website, I had to do a little digging on the Internet Archive. And what, oh what did I see? A picture of John F. Kerry, smiling back at me...
Surely there must be some mistake. John F. Kerry, who slams the Bush administration for jobs being sent overseas, took part in a trade mission to facilitate moving American Jobs(TM) to China? This can't be. There has to be something on this now-missing page that tells the truth about what Kerry really was doing in China. Maybe he was twisting Chinese arms to get them to buy Made-in-the-USA goods? That prompted further reading:
![]() |
| Senator John F. Kerry, in an undated photo from the late 1990's, is shown with Paul Marcus, head of Boston Capital & Technology. BCT, which helps US companies set up manufacturing and other operations in China, sponsored the trade mission to China. |
"Boston Capital & Technology (BCT) recently held the first U.S. trade mission to the People's Republic of China organized and sponsored by a private corporation that was led by a U.S. Senator. To close the Mission, BCT hosted a banquet in Beijing's legendary Great Hall of the People."
(Ooh, the Great Hall of the People. I hear they have really good appetizers.)
"Through this Mission and dozens of other on the ground initiatives undertaken by BCT every year, BCT is able to advance their manufacturing projects in China, the projects of their partners and clients, and the position of dozens of other associated U.S. companies establishing positions throughout mainland China."
Gee, that doesn't sound like it helps keep jobs in America. Quite the contrary, it sounds like this company was and is on a mission (trade or otherwise) to help move American Jobs(TM) to China. And according to Kerry, that's a bad, bad thing - at least when President Bush can be blamed for it. Let's give BCT one last chance to redeem itself as a company helping save American jobs:
"Boston Capital & Technology provides investment and advisory services to US companies wishing to establish or expand manufacturing operations in Mainland China. BCT selectively participates in significant U.S.-China investment, partnership, and technology transfer opportunities. BCT has an American and Chinese staff of highly successful investment, finance, technology, trade, and project management professionals who successfully bridge the gap between wanting things done in China and getting things done in China. . . . To date BCT has completed or has in progress over 70 projects in China. . ."
Hmm, over 70 projects in China. And that's just an archive of their website from late 2003. Just think how many more projects they've been involved with, and how many American Jobs(TM) have been moved to China in 2004, all while John Kerry was bashing Bush on outsourcing.
Is all this being a little harsh on Kerry? I mean, what's one more flip-flop, nuance, or deception between friends? Should this be treated just like the Vietnam issue, where Kerry has the right to campaign almost solely on his four months in Vietnam 35 years ago, but if anyone questions him on Vietnam, it's not relevant to his campaign? Likely for the press, yes, this will be treated just like the Vietnam claims, because Kerry possesses the sacred Free Media Pass based on two sterling qualifications: 1 - He's a liberal democrat, and 2 -He's not George W. Bush.
So while this 'nuanced' approach to the outsourcing issue may be ignored by the mainstream media, hopefully it will find a foothold on the Internet and Talk radio. The real controversy here isn't that John Kerry supports outsourcing. Indeed, there are Americans that believe in the benefits of outsourcing just as there are those that are opposed to the practice. Each side stands by their positions and is willing to defend them. The difference with John Kerry is that the same person who called businesses outsourcing jobs 'Benedict Arnold Companies' took an active role in making outsourcing jobs to China easier. Clearly it is another situation where Kerry wishes to enjoy the benefits of being on both sides of an issue.
And that is why this needs to be brought to light. The American people have the right to know that if they're thinking of voting for Kerry based on his stance on an issue important to them, there is no way of knowing which position John Kerry really holds.
