WASHINGTON, Aug. 12 -- Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa (5th CD), issued the following press release:
Iowa Rep. Steve King applauded Chairman Thomas today for agreeing to hold a hearing on major tax reforms, including the FairTax.
As news sources reported yesterday, Representative Bill Thomas, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, announced that his committee would consider replacing the federal income tax with a national sales tax.
"I have been working to move to a national sales tax, or FairTax, even before I was elected to Congress", said King. We should abolish all federal income taxes, including the regressive payroll tax, and replace them with the FairTax (HR 25), a federal retail sales tax on all new goods and services purchased for personal consumption."
"I am glad to hear that my efforts to get a hearing on the FairTax have been successful and that Chairman Thomas is open to the idea of a FairTax. I am looking forward to working with him in the coming months."
Speaker Hastert has recently called for monumental tax reform in his new book, including consideration of a national sales tax.
"It is time to abolish the IRS and unleash the productive sector of our economy", said King.
Congressman Linder did tell a story about Rep. King's congressional campaign. He said that every time his opponent distorted the FairTax or tried to mislead or scare the electorate about what it would do, his (King's) poll numbers went up. Finally, a week before the election, his opponent declared himself in favor of hte FairTax, also.
We have to keep that perspective when the naysayers come out of the woodwork. Senator Kerry and Bruce Bartlett are doing us an enormous favor. This probably wouldn't be happening without their recent attacks.

It might be better to send it to Dr Alan Keyes, who will be running hard on this issue in the Illinois senate race.
Also, Congressman Linder said yesterday that John Thune will be running on this issue in the SD senate race.

So am I.

You will note that the hearings aren't LIMITED to the FairTax. You and Willie Green are certainly free to petition W&M to include your proposals in the procedure. If you want to defend the current system, that's ok, too. We need to have a national debate, invite everyone to the table and let everyone make their case.
I've known Steve King for almost 10 years. He's the Real Deal.

Glad to hear it. I have been impressed with what I have seen and heard about him.
I have known Linder for a little over 10 years now. He is a rare breed - someone who is in politics because he wants to make a difference. He has all three of the attributes that I value most in an elected official in spades:
(1) He's incredibly smart,
(2) He works extremely hard, and
(3) His ethics are above reproach.
I can't think of anyone that I would want spearheading this historic effort except him.

Steve and I are from the same small Iowa town. I started doing politics at a precinct caucus in his business' office over a decade ago.
Way back then, we had hours-long deep into the night discussions on this exact issue. We both reached the same conclusion: If we are to provide for liberty and prosperity for our children and grandchildren, the NRST is the only way to go.
There have been many battles since those days, on many fronts. But he has never swerved or faltered in championing fundamental tax reform.
Steve King is one of the most capable legislators I have ever known, at any level of government. I thank God that we have him in the House fighting our fight for us. He's a good man.

Most men, especially politicians, wait for history to happen, and then react.
Then there are men who, through vision, force of will and resolute action, make history.
Steve King is of the latter, rarer, breed.
Dr. Keyes played an important role in Steve's election. I'll have to share the story with you sometime.
I had the privilege of arranging a private meal between the two men at that time.
Sure was a ton of talent in that room. :-)
If we can continue adding men like this to the Congress, there is great hope for restoring and defending our free republic.

That reminds me of a conversation that was related to me that took place between J. C. Watts and Herman Cain when Herman was considering running for the senate. J. C. said to Herman that there were 3 types of legislators in Washington. First, there were about 15% who had their eye on some plum position, such as a committee chairmanship, cabinet post or head of a federal agency. Then, there was another 15% who wanted to make a difference relative to some issue that they cared deeply about. And what about the other 70%, Herman wanted to know? Oh, they're just glad to be there, replied Watts.
Thankfully, neither Linder nor King are just glad to be there.
