Kari Schutz, McGreevey's first wife, conceded she has known for some time her husband is gay, though she declined to say exactly how long.

Schutz would put no time frame to the length of time she knew McGreevey was gay. She also would not comment on whether she was aware of anyone else with that knowledge holding it over his head to make demands.

"You'd better ask him that," Schutz said.

McGreevey met Schutz on a one-week cruise in 1990 and married her a year later. Their daughter Morag [Gaelic for Mary] was born in October 1992.

1995 divorce papers said McGreevey had focused on his political career, neglecting his family.

One of the most jarring moments for her came in 1993 when Republicans sent out fliers showing a car similar to McGreevey's in front of an adult sex shop with the words: "Caught with his government-owned car enjoying himself in Manhattan."

With current Supreme Court Justice Barry Albin as attorney, McGreevey filed a libel suit against the Republicans. It was settled in 1995 when the state GOP sent a letter of apology and called the photo "inaccurate,"

Matos McGreevey, a native of Newark's Ironbound section, met her husband around the time of his divorce.

She is executive director of the Columbus Hospital Foundation in Newark and was public relations manager of the city's St. James Hospital.

A former president of the Portuguese American Congress, Matos McGreevey was active in voter registration and naturalization campaigns and once served as commissioner of the Elizabeth planning board.

She went into preterm labor three days before McGreevey's election, giving birth to Jacqueline on Dec. 7, 2001,

I've noticed a big Irish identity thing here. I live North of Trenton, about 5 miles upstream along the Delaware. Most of my neighbors are Irish Catholic. They're good people, but they're yellow-dog Democrats.

Same with Italians. I once heard two Italian acquaintances speaking and one identified the other as a fellow -- and I don't recall the region, but it was Southern Italian. I said, "gee I had you pegged as Americans..." and they got almost apologetic and explained it was "just an ethnic thing." And I believe them. They are good guys and patriots.

But this is the sort of thing that keeps people on the Democratic rosters: grandpa did it, dad and mom did it,etc. I hope Bush's people are aware of this; that demographic is easy to overlook.

I'm sure they're both fine women. But just off the top of my head I can think of half a dozen things -- rhymes and such -- that schoolyard bullies might call someone named Morag. Maybe that's true of just about any name, but unfamilar or hard to place ones attract attention.

It looks like McGreevey really played up the Irish connection. Certainly that was a big asset for JFK, and while plenty of Irish Americans have lost that ethnic connection, some cling to it, and a lot of Irish immigrants have arrived since the 1960s.

From what I gather, in the gay/lesbian world, Bisexuality really is "the love that dare not speak it's name".

....although it would appear that bisexuality is definitive proof of choice and not biology being the driving factor in determining 'sexual orientation'.

They choose either sex depending on what they want at a particular moment.

The two openly gay males I've worked with have nothing good to say about bi-sexuals.

How can ANY woman want to make love, have sex (whatever you call it) with a man who is sexually interested in other MEN?!?

So-called "fag hags" (women with gay male friends) do not generally want to have sex with them, they just enjoy their friendship. Some effeminate gay men (not the cowboys, but the interior decorator types) are equally interested in a platonic friendship with straight women. There is no sex or sexual tension involved--that may in fact be why "fag hags" like gay men. It's not about getting into their pants.

And yeah, I think it's weird and maybe even pathetic. But it's not about sex--women who want that can generally get it without trying to seduce men who aren't interested.
