It's just unnerving and scary not hearing from anyone down there.

Winds from hurricanes, even mild ones far from the core, often blow down power and phone lines, plus the phones circuits tend to get busy with everyone calling relatives in/out of the area, so not hearing from someone is pretty normal, and most likely nothing to be scared about.

My Favorite Headache - I am in Brevard right now but going to stay with a friend in Plant City, 25 mins outside of Tampa Bay.

VERY BAD IDEA ALERT If you haven't left yet, DON'T. You will be driving perpendicular to the storm and if it jogs back north, you are looking down the barrel. If you break down or if someone else does and the highway is blocked, ditto. If you are in northern Brevard, go south to Vero Beach.
